Job Summary
Alliant Energy is currently hiring for a Unit Operator - Large Steam Plant. This position will be located our Edgewater Generating Station, in Sheboygan, WI.
The person in this role is responsible for the safe and efficient operation of steam boilers, electric generating units, coal handling and auxiliary equipment.
This position is estimated to last until the retirement of the Plant, approximately 36 months. At the time of plant retirement, you will be eligible to apply for positions internally with the company.
What you will do
  • Operates control equipment to obtain safe and economical operation of boilers, turbines and auxiliary equipment.
  • Operates switchboard to obtain safe and proper operation of plant and system electrical equipment.
  • Receives calls and executes orders from the Generation Dispatch Center; keeps a complete record of orders, operations and incidents.
  • Prepares logs and reports as required.
  • Informs the shift supervisor of any abnormal or unusual conditions that may occur.
  • Performs troubleshooting activities related to plant operating systems.
  • Keeps the control room neat and orderly.
  • Substitutes and routinely performs the duties of the Equipment Operator - Operations inside the plant.
  • Assists in the training of employees.
  • Performs maintenance work of ordinary nature when not operating.
  • Performs all work according to established procedures and safety practices.
  • Performs other duties which are similar, related, and incidental to the position.

Education Requirements
  • High school diploma or GED

Required Experience
  • Experience in power plant operations

Preferred Experience
  • Experience as an Equipment Operator-Operations

Other Requirements
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Possesses skills in reading, basic math and electricity and have mechanical aptitude.
  • Good theoretical knowledge of generating station systems and company electrical operating procedures
  • Able to remain calm during emergencies
  • Capable of quick accurate decisions and speed of execution
  • Ability to perform the physical requirements of the job
  • Ability to work effectively in a culturally diverse work group.
