We currently have an exciting opportunity for an Underwriting Specialist with further growth opportunities in Underwriting to join a well-established company in a department that is rapidly growing and expanding with new partners and in new jurisdictions.

Position Summary:

The Underwriting Specialist in the Medical Professional Liability (MPL) line of business will play a crucial role in assessing and managing risk associated with healthcare providers. They will learn the intricacies of underwriting policies, evaluating applications, and risk analysis to select appropriate risks within the company's underwriting appetite. This position offers a unique opportunity to gain hands-on experience in the dynamic field of MPL insurance.


Key Functions:

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

Data Collection: Reviews applications for completeness, requesting appropriate underwriting information and documents the files accordingly

Risk Analysis: Assist in underwriting MPL policies by reviewing applications, loss runs; analyze risks, such as provider specialties, practice settings, and other relevant information; select risks in compliance with company guidelines and regulatory requirements. Determines eligibility for coverage based on the underwriting guidelines. Performs technical underwriting for solo physicians and small medical groups, which includes claims history review, reviewing exposure information, making, and communicating approval/denial decisions, reviewing and assessing coverage needs.

Performs company policy services, including various correspondence with members and brokers

Develops and maintains a working knowledge of underwriting guidelines, policy types, coverages, rules, rates and forms, as well as competitors' policies and rates to actively participate in suggesting modifications.

Establishes and maintains relationships with members and the broker partners

Collaborates within the department and other departments to provide comprehensive underwriting solutions

Responds to underwriting inquires timely within the Company's services standards

Training and Development by participating in training programs and learning about emerging risks.

Performs other duties and responsibilities as required


Requirements / Qualifications:

A 4-year college degree with desired majors including Risk Management and Insurance, Economics, Business Administration, Finance, Math, Statistics or equivalent work experience in insurance.

Willing to engage in additional industry and professional development and designations

Strong analytical, problem solving skills and attention to detail.

Excellent oral and written communication and interpersonal skills

Eagerness to learn and adapt to a fast-paced environment.

Excellent planning, time management, and prioritization skills.

Strong commitment to customer service, quality, and working in a collaborative team environment.

Demonstrates technical ability to work with Microsoft Office, and other systems.


The salary range for this position is $66,900 to $100,100. Starting salary is determined by several factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training. This position is also eligible for an annual company bonus at an incentive target level of 5%.
