Our Fidelity / Crime Division is one of the largest monoline crime insurers in North America, underwriting private and public businesses, financial institutions, and governmental entities. Additionally, Fidelity / Crime offers specialized products and programs for kidnap, ransom & extortion, casinos and gaming operations, armored car companies, mining risks, ATM companies, security guards, check cashers and fine art.

We are currently searching for an Underwriter or Senior Underwriter for our Canadian operations. The role of the Underwriter/Senior Underwriter is to market, underwrite and produce profitable Fidelity and Crime business on a national basis in accordance with Company objectives and policies. This position may be 100% remote. This is a salaried position.

Responsibilities:

Underwriting & Risk Selection

  • Responsible for producing new business and management of select renewal business, including analysis of risk and negotiation of policy terms and conditions while meeting growth, retention, and profitability targets in line with divisional objectives.
    • Negotiates coverage options and premium while maintaining underwriting discipline/profitability as well as promoting the “ease of doing business” with Great American Insurance.
    • Uses independent judgment and initiative to support business goals.
    • Maintains a high level of customer service.
    • Receives and analyzes submissions and determines terms to offer (policy limits, deductibles, coverage options and conditions, etc.).
    • Prices business in accordance with company guidelines.
    • Assesses risk quality and compliance within company guidelines.
    • Orders and analyzes miscellaneous business reports needed in the rating and underwriting processes, including credit checks, contract agreements, financial statements, and underwriting surveys.
    • Makes recommendations on risks.
    • Enters, maintains, and monitors accounts using underwriting, analysis, and desktop systems.
    • Prepares effective internal and external communications on underwriting issues.
  • Applies underwriting rules and guidelines, rating manual rules, and insurance laws and regulations.

Marketing & Distribution Management

  • Develops and maintains effective business relationships with internal and external customers/coworkers to attract and retain profitable business.
  • Achieves company growth objectives by recognizing sales opportunities, soliciting desirable business, and diligently following-up on quoted business.
  • Develops strong market presence by being active in broker marketing and industry associations/organizations.
  • Assists in planning and executing company broker events and presentations.
  • Assists in planning and facilitating various broker training and continuing education events.
  • Supports, contributes, and executes the successful delivery of strategy, marketing, and growth plans.
  • Interacts with the producers/insureds, assists in marketing calls, and participates in underwriting/production calls.
    • Interprets, explains, and markets products and services.
    • Visits producers and principals, as well as attends industry or company events, to retain existing accounts, survey exposures, build and maintain business relationships, and develop new opportunities in support of divisional objectives.
  • Travels up to 25% of the time to visit producers and insureds and attend industry or company events.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Generally, at least 3 years of commercial underwriting experience or insurance brokerage or business development experience.
  • Fidelity/Crime or management liability underwriting experience is preferred, but not required.
  • Effective presentation and marketing skills.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • Must be open to travel at least 20-25% of the time, including overnight travel and occasional travel to the United States.
  • Must possess a high level of customer service and proven success in building and maintaining effective business relationships.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • High level of organizational skills, ability to establish priorities and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong negotiation skills.
  • Proficiency in PC based programs and Microsoft Office.
  • Professional designations, such as Chartered Insurance Professional (CIP), Fellow Chartered Insurance Professional (FCIP), CRM, (or working towards), would be a plus.
  • Bilingual in French not required but would be a plus.
