Responsibilities/Duties:
- Provide friendly, professional, and approachable staff to offer information and assistance to all downtown individuals. Staff should have a familiarity with downtown Bellingham and the community services and resources available.
- Monitor a central dispatch number and respond to service calls and requests for escorts to and from vehicles and/or buildings.
- Patrol the Downtown Safety Area on foot and/or bicycle to aid as needed and deter illegal or disruptive activities, behaviors and/or crime.
- Perform periodic exterior security checks at City facilities.
- Perform regular check-ins with ground-floor businesses within the Downtown Service Area to introduce the program, gather feedback and offer support.
- Employ non-violent communication techniques and other best practices to de-escalate minor behavioral incidents.
- Report crimes in process to 911, and other crimes that have occurred to the City of Bellingham Police Department via the non-emergency line or online portal.
- Report requests for City services, including litter pick up, sidewalk or other repair, vandalism, encampments, etc. via the See Click Fix City services website or application.
- Refer vulnerable community members to service providers such as the Homeless Outreach Team (HOT), Mobile Crisis Outreach Team (MCOT), and other behavioral health services as requested and/or needed.
- Ensure sidewalks and building entrances are kept clear of all obstacles for safe access and pedestrian passage.
- Provide information to individuals about downtown amenities, directions, services, and regulations.
- Offer information about available shelters and other social services and resources to community members in need.
- Document patrol routes, interactions, and outcomes for reporting purposes.
- Participate in meetings and provide community outreach in collaboration with the City’s Project Manager.

Required Skills/Abilities:
- Smart phone to access the apps we use for scheduling, clocking in/out, and reporting.
- Reliable transportation
- Honesty and Integrity
- Able to work non-traditional hours including swings, graveyard, weekends, and holidays.
- Must hold a Washington State DOL Unarmed or Armed Security Guard License
- Must hold a current TWIC card.
- Ability to react appropriately in high stress situations.
Education and Experience:
- High School Diploma or Equivalent
- Prior Public Safety and/or Military experience preferred.
- TWIC card required.
- Knowledge of security protocols, and equipment
Physical Requirements:
- Must be able to conduct regular walking foot patrols.
- Able to stand 8-12 hours a day.
- Must be able to lift to 50 pounds at times (occasionally)
