Full-time Floating Ultrasonographer - 2 locations (Waterbury & Prospect)

Position Primary Purpose: Responsible for performing ultrasound exams and assisting radiographers in utilizing diagnostic equipment in order to successfully complete patient exams. Provide direct patient care to patients of all ages. Contribute to efficient operation of NVRA office, ensuring the quality and continuity of patient care. Promote superior customer service at all times. Adhere to the NVRA confidentiality and Privacy Practices.

Essential Function: Ultrasound Exams

  • Identifies each patient and reviews each patient’s requisition, either hard copy or in computer system, for consistency of examination ordered with clinical diagnosis and all demographic information.
  • Demonstrates competency and proficiency guidance: performing all required ultrasound exams, positioning the patient and equipment and selecting correct transducer and optimal technique.
  • Records pertinent data on radiologic requisition and/or DR notes at all times, Technologist’s name, reason for exam, previous exam history, technique used, measurements, findings etc.
  • Assesses patient condition, ensures patient safety through proper use of equipment.
  • Reviews each examination for technical accuracy, presents completed exams to radiologist and communicates pertinent data to persons responsible for the care of the patient following the procedure.
  • Identified anatomical orientation of all required images and ensures proper film identification on all images.
  • Coordinates patient’s examination to ensure the quality and continuity of patient care and assists with the management of the workflow of the NVRA office to ensure the completion of the work assignments in the absence of the supervisor.
  • Uses computer system in documenting correctly and accurately patient information to ensure the quality of patient care: patient’s full name, patient’s radiographic file number, patient’s date of birth, exams performed and referring physician.
  • Demonstrates the ability to perform all necessary computer operations to ensure proper examination documentation and charges.
  • Maintains confidentiality and privacy of all NVRA office related information.
  • Initiates applicable “incident reports” by end of shift and reports incomplete and incorrect exams to ensure the proper patient charge and continuity of patient care.
  • Burns CDs/Imaging Sharing for patients and referrers.
  • Utilize work steps in MI to facilitate requirement of verifying all scrips and demos.
  • Oversee patient schedule and facilitate to fill open slots.
  • Responsible for completing STAT exams and documentation “report documentation” in the RIS.
  • Provides proper notification for absence or tardiness.
  • Demonstrates proper response and reliability for weekend coverage.
  • Demonstrates proper response for coverage of other NVRA offices.
  • Establishes and maintains a good rapport and cooperative working relationship with all office staff, including NVRA office and all referring offices, patients and families.
  • Monitors inventory of supplies and notifies appropriate supervisor when stock is low.
  • Assists manager to ensure the quality of work in the diagnostic office.
  • Keeps manager informed of any unusual concerns, situations, or conditions relative to staff, patients and physicians.
  • Demonstrates commitment to professional growth and competence.
  • Attends conferences and in-services as required and acquires CME’s to keep current with ARDMS specialty standards.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of institutional regulations regarding patient care, fire and safety, infection control disaster plans, and emergency codes and procedures according to office procedure.
  • Participates in own performance appraisal by identifying individual goals and reviewing progress with NVRA Manager.
  • Assist front desk staff with patient arrival, phone calls and other tasks to improve patient experience.
  • Assists patients with kiosks when necessary.
  • Oversees student rotations.

Essential Function: Customer Service Focus

  • Welcomes all assigned patients immediately by saying hello and providing name to patient.
  • Promotes patient understanding by explaining the scheduled procedure to the patient.
  • Practices outstanding customer service to patents and referrers.
  • Promotes a professional office atmosphere by keeping personal conversations to a minimum in public areas within hearing distance of patients (i.e., front desk, tech area).
  • Thanks patients for choosing Naugatuck Valley Radiology for their exam needs. Offers patients the “patient checkout” and encourages their feedback.

Education/Certification: Completion of Certified Ultrasound Program with ARDMS Certification and/or Board Certified or Eligible in assigned specialty. Associates degree preferred.

Required Technical knowledge:

  • Knowledge of ultrasound examinations
  • Knowledge of equipment operation and safety
  • Knowledge of patient transfers and positioning techniques

Credential/Licenses Required:

  • Certification by the American Registry of Diagnostic Medical Sonographers or applicable specialty board.
  • Board Certified or Eligible* in assigned specialty.

*Board Eligible applies to New Hires only.

Repetitive Motions/ Physical Efforts: Majority of time spent on feet, with substantial amount of pushing, pulling, lifting and positioning of patients. Worker must be able to adjust routine to accommodate patient or office without affecting office flow. Requires individual to perform moderately difficult hand-eye coordination skills, walk and stand for prolonged periods, see objects closely, and hear normal sounds with some background noises. Must be able to work within a limited space and in bright and low lighted examination rooms.

Physical/Strength: Position requires ability to frequently lift objects heavier than 50 pounds, perform moderately difficult manipulative skill. Annual Flu Shot required.

Occupational Risks: Employee is subject to normal occupational hazards for employee in radiological work at various sites. Employee may frequently be exposed to hazardous materials such as chemical and electromagnetic radiation as in CRT’s (VDT’s), radiation, blood/body tissues/fluids.
