- GENERAL SUMMARY
- Works under the supervision of the Registered Nurse. The Unit Clerk/Monitor Tech/Nursing Intern's primary job function is to perform clerical duties associated with preparing, compiling, and maintaining the patient records on a clinical nursing unit. Performs a variety of basic patient care activities in caring for the personal needs and comfort of patients. Supports each Strategic Value by providing exceptional service. Performs other duties as assigned.
- QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- High School Diploma or successful completion of an equivalent High School Exam Required
- Ability to read, write, and speak English required
- Enrolled in an approved school of nursing required
Licensure:
- BLS within 90 days of hire required

Interpersonal Skills:
- Good interpersonal skills needed in dealing with nursing staff, physicians, patients, families, and other members of the health care team.
Essential Technical/Motor Skills:
- Precise hand/eye coordination to input/transcribe physicians' orders into computer in a rapid, accurate, and timely fashion. Ability to speak clearly in regard to questions about physicians' orders, etc. Legible handwriting.
Essential Physical Requirements:
- The physical demand level is light to medium. Occasionally lifts 20 pounds or less when transporting patients' charts and supplies. Stands and/or walks for one to four hours per day with regular breaks when filing, photocopying, and running errands. Sits for five to eight hours per day with regular breaks when performing relevant clerical duties such as transcribing physicians' orders and maintaining patients' charts. Ability to use hands for repetitive simple grasping, fine manipulation, and pushing and pulling when performing clerical assignments i.e., transcribing and patient charting, answering telephone, filing and maintaining unit supplies. Bending, squatting, climbing, crawling, and reaching above shoulder level are occasionally required when storing and retrieving supplies and filing.
Essential Mental Requirements:
- Has occasional contact with general public and customer when performing all aspects of job. Must be able to cope when occasionally working close supervision and without assistance of other personnel. Requires the ability to frequently concentrate and pay close attention to detail when transcribing physicians' orders and maintaining patients' charts. Must also frequently cope with deadlines under pressure
Essential Sensory Requirements:
- Good vision is required when transcribing physician orders and maintaining patients' charts. The ability to communicate effectively is required when gathering and exchanging information with physicians, patients, visitors, and various hospital employees.
Exposure to Hazards:
- Normal patient care environment with occasional exposure to excessive dust, odors, body fluids, sharp instruments, toxic substances, moving machinery, unpleasant patient care activities and infectious disease. Frequently exposed to noise.

- Maintains patient records.
- Functions as a communication source for the nursing unit.
- Records data, reports, enters patient charges and other information.
- Monitors cardiac rhythm by means of telemetry and/or hardwire.
- Interprets and identifies rhythms.
- Reports variances and life threatening arrythmias to appropriate RN.
- Welcomes and greets those coming on the unit.
- Uses telephone etiquette according to SOMC's standards for behavior.
- Places orders for replacement items including pharmacy, stockroom, procedure room and clinical.
- Meets all core job duties of the Nurse Resident job description.
- Performs pre-cleaning, decontamination, and transports instruments that have been used on patients appropriately.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
