Job Description:
The intern will work in UCB’s Washington, DC office supporting the company’s U.S. Public Policy and Government Relations (GR) team (part of the US Corporate Affairs team). The intern will split their time working on projects related to federal and state public policy, federal and state government relations, and political programs (e.g., UCB’s political action committee (PAC)). Specifically, the intern will be responsible for the following activities:
· Review new rules and regulations to assess implications for patient access to UCB treatments;
· Assist with development of materials to be distributed to internal and external stakeholders;
· Attend Congressional hearings, state legislature hearings, Administration meetings, and other relevant meetings (e.g., coalition, trade association, etc.) and draft summaries for the Policy and GR team;
· Maintain a list of federal legislation critical to UCB, including brief descriptions of bills, providing updates as legislation moves through the process;
· Assist policy and GR team with development of presentations to be delivered to internal stakeholders and partners;
· Assist the Policy and GR team with research tasks related to legislation, regulation, CMS guidance, state bill amendments, state regulation, etc.;
· Attend (in-person and/or virtual) lobbying, taskforce, trade association meetings with state Government Relations Directors (GRDs);
· Assist in operational activities associated with UCB’s political action committee (U-PAC) including marketing and communications to U-PAC members and eligible employees;
· Support development of presentations for meeting with U-PAC’s board of directors;
· Maintain a calendar of federal Congressional fundraising events;
· Using a standardized template, update and develop coding, coverage and reimbursement profiles for UCB therapies to enable better understanding of impact of policy; and
· Engage cross-functionally in Corporate Affairs to compile reports and presentations.
Qualifications:
· Strong communication skills, particularly writing for different audiences and in different formats;
· Baseline understanding of the U.S. healthcare system;
· Ability to work independently after given initial direction by supervisor and meeting deadlines;
· Demonstrated leadership skills;
· Ability to synthesize material quickly and provide clear and concise summaries;
· Adept in researching, particularly government documents;
· Intellectual curiosity and a desire to learn more about the company and the team’s work;
· Strong organizational skills and ability to multitask and prioritize; and
· Experience developing presentations for different types of audiences, particularly using MS PowerPoint.
