Job description

Do you love books, music, and movies? Do you have a passion for building a broad collection that will delight our community? The Upper Arlington Public Library is seeking an enthusiastic, detail-oriented professional to join our Technical Services team as a Collection Development Specialist. In this role you will be responsible for selecting new materials for the library's adult and media collections, in collaboration with department staff. Monitoring the materials budget and analyzing collection performance to identify and respond to usage trends are key parts of this role. This position will also serve as a US Passport Agent and provide public service as needed.

Essential Functions:
  • Selects and develops collections as assigned for all library locations.
  • Coordinates and monitors profiled ordering plans.
  • Collaborates with staff to gather collection recommendations.
  • Monitors collection budget lines for materials for all library locations.
  • Analyzes the performance of the collection and makes recommendations for improvement.
  • Recommends workflow improvements with a goal to improve speed and efficiency.
  • Responds to patrons' suggestions for materials purchase.
  • Establishes Collection Development goals and evaluates collections annually in conjunction with each location.
  • Meets regularly with all locations to ensure maintenance of collection and establish collection needs.
  • Provides coverage in public service areas as needed.
  • Serves as a Passport Agent for the Library.
  • Develops tools including booklists and bibliographies.
  • Confers with community groups and organizations to identify needs and promote use of services, programs, and facilities as needed.
  • Contributes print and digital content for the library as required.
  • Keeps abreast of current trends, technology, and new professional techniques; participates in the activities of professional and related organizations.
  • Serves on library committees as assigned.
  • Follows library safety and emergency procedures.
  • Reports maintenance and safety issues to supervisor and/or Facilities personnel.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Considerable knowledge of literature, reference, informational, and other library materials, programming, and services.
  • Knowledge of public library reference tools, including web and database searching and evaluation as well as the standards, practices, and techniques of reference service.
  • Effective customer service and interpersonal skills, including the ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English.
  • Competent in the use of Windows-based computer programs.
  • Proficiency in word processing, spreadsheet, and database programs.
  • Valid Ohio driver's license and proof of insurance.

Education and Experience:
  • Master's degree in library science from an American Library Association (ALA) accredited school in library science required.
  • Two or more years of work experience serving patrons including reader's advisory and with reference and informational materials in a public library setting required.
Physical and Environmental Conditions:
  • The work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of libraries and offices, which includes the need for general safe workplace practices with office equipment and computers, avoidance of trips and falls, and observance of fire regulations.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet to moderate.
  • Considerable mobility including, but not limited to, extensive periods of walking, bending, sitting, lifting weights up to 20 pounds, and pushing full book carts.
  • Manual dexterity sufficient to perform general typing and computer skills.
  • Calm and focused handling of interruptions and distractions.
  • Periodic intense concentration and sustained viewing of a computer monitor.
  • Occasional local travel by personal automobile may be required.
Schedule:
Full-time. Monday through Friday business hours.
