Job Summary:
The Farm Nutrient Equipment Operator & Spreader manages the litter in the manure barns including placement, turning, and drying, blending, and taking samples to monitor quality and process effectiveness. Operates loaders, spreaders, and other equipment to unload, manage inventory, blend fertilizer, load trucks and spread manure when fields are available to spread. Ensures product quality, equipment maintenance and overall equipment efficiency.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Operates spreading equipment in a way that ensures fields are spread in a quality and efficient manner
- Tracks loads, calculates total tons, checks and marks fields, and guides trucks to proper locations
- Coordinates spreading schedule with Scale house and customer to optimize the spreader path
- Inspects and performs routine maintenance checks
- Transport supplies and equipment from location to location
- Operates pay-loader in field to load spreader
- Assists as needed during spring and fall fertilizer seasons with equipment moving and maintenance
- Operates a front-end loader to move product and/or load trucks
- Handles the blending of materials used for composting of spent hens and mortality
- Performs other functions including site and equipment maintenance as defined by the supervisor
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Required:
- Valid driver’s license
- Ability to work significant overtime from September through February
- Overnight travel up to 30% from September through February
- DNR applicators license or willing to pursue
- Ability to communicate with farmers and have base knowledge of farming
- Mechanical and heavy equipment knowledge
- Ability to drive tractors, front-end loaders, pay-loaders, skid loaders, scat machine and fertilizer spreaders
- Ability to operate power tools and equipment safely
- Awareness and knowledge of surroundings in relation to climate, atmosphere, and equipment
- Hand/Eye/Foot Coordination
- Independent Self Starter/Team Player
- Attention to detail
- Ability to read, understand and effectively communicate information through writing and speaking so others will understand
- Intermediate English: speaking, reading, and writing
- Mathematical skills: General Arithmetic/Basic Algebra/Percentages/Fractions
Preferred:
- Valid state motor vehicle operator’s license, CDL or other DOT qualifications for operation of a commercial motor vehicle
- Fine Motor Skills
- Computer Skills: Touch screen, Word, Excel, Outlook, Internet
