DescriptionBTC is a premier higher education institution working to provide student-centered, high quality professional technical education throughout Whatcom County and is the only technical college serving northwest Washington State. Bellingham rests in the scenic northwest corner of Washington State where the Cascade Mountains meet the Salish Sea.Bellingham Technical College invites applications for a Student Success Coach for its TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) program. This is a full-time, grant-funded, FLSA overtime eligible position, is not represented by a union, and is at-will position.

The position reports to the TRIO SSS Project Director. The grant is scheduled to end by August 31, 2025; however, grant-funded positions are temporary, dependent upon project funding, and can end at any time funding is discontinued. Position is anticipated to begin about February 1, 2024.The TRIO Student Success Coach is a key member of the TRIO team and provides intensive support services for students enrolled in the TRIO Student Support Services grant at Bellingham Technical College.

This position is primarily responsible for providing academic, personal, and career coaching services, as well as providing support for PT hourly/student leader hiring, training, and coordination. The Success Coach assists with program recruitment and enrollment activities, among other essential duties. The role of TRIO is to assist students who have been historically underserved (first generation, students from low-income households, and students with disabilities) to increase college retention and graduation rates.TRIO Student Support Services is a grant funded program through the U.S.

Dept. of Education, as mandated by the 1968 Higher Education Act. TRIO SSS is limited to serving 140 students and assists them in successfully navigating barriers and seizing opportunities to actualize their educational and career goals.

This is accomplished through intensive support services including summer bridge, orientations, coaching and peer mentoring, a dedicated TRIO lounge, career and academic planning, free 24/7 tutoring, financial aid and scholarship support, and opportunities to engage in personal and financial wellness workshop and cultural activities. The successful candidate will be expected to establish a successful and supportive learning environment for a diverse college student population with a wide-range of backgrounds and experiences.Position Duties & Responsibilities* Implement and support the TRIO SSS coaching program by providing thorough, proactive coaching services to maximize persistence of students in their chosen program of study and helping them become engaged in the educational environment;* Help develop and coordinate marketing and recruitment plans and activities;* Coordinate SSS Summer Bridge/orientation events and activities for new program participants. Summer Bridge and orientation programming includes but is not limited to an introduction to the program, study skills, financial literacy, career exploration and personal motivation assessments and workshops, and leadership development;* Help students prepare individual Academic, Career and Personal Success Plans, which includes reviewing and interpreting academic skills and assessment results to determine appropriate placement in courses;* Communicate regularly and effectively with advisees through online technology and personal contacts;* Collaborate closely with other staff members to assess progress towards and achievement of project goals and objectives;* Develop, coordinate, and lead quarterly workshops, educational programs and engagement initiatives targeted to meet TRIO program objectives;* Monitor student academic progress and intervene with students in academic jeopardy by assisting them to make appropriate decisions and persist toward their academic goals;* Assist with developing and coordinating TRIO marketing and recruitment plans and activities;* Provide referrals to BTC faculty, counselors, tutoring, and/or outside agencies as appropriate;* Maintain data records in accordance with grant requirements and complete requested reports that include statistics on services provided;* Maintain on-going, positive relationships with faculty, administrators, and staff to facilitate interdepartmental cooperation and program success;* Collaborate closely with other TRIO staff members to assess progress towards and achieve project goals and objectives;* Cultivate and maintain contact with appropriate staff at baccalaureate-awarding institutions of higher education to facilitate information-sharing and conduct student activities focused on transfer;* Perform other duties as assigned in relation to the grant's overall goals.QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:* Bachelor's Degree in Administration, Business, Education, Human Services, Student Affairs, or related field;* At least three years of experience in a higher education setting in advising, assessment or career coaching required;* Demonstrated ability to support the success of individuals with varied ethnicity, ages, backgrounds, and abilities;* Experience working successfully with a team.OR* An equivalent combination of education, experience and training that provides the applicant with the knowledge and skills to perform the job will be considered.Preferred Qualifications:* Master's degree in Administration, Business, Education, Human Services, Student Affairs, or related field;* Experience in student advising, career guidance, educational planning and/or career services in a technical/community college setting;* Experience working with low-income and first-generation students and students with disabilities;* Experience teaching and/or experience facilitating or conducting workshops, seminars, presentations and meetings.Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:* Knowledge of grant development and administration;* Strong communication, organizational, interpersonal skills and problem-solving skills;* Strong project evaluation and reporting skills;* Demonstrated computer software literacy, including Microsoft Office applications, databases; as well as the Internet and online environments;* Commitment to pluralism and the ability to support a diverse workplace;* Flexibility and ability to embrace change;* Interest in and ability to implement innovative practices;* Demonstrated ability to work with individuals of varied ethnicity, ages, backgrounds, and abilities;* Demonstrated ability to work with staff, faculty and community partners in an inclusive and participatory manner;* Ability to work under pressure and prioritize competing demands;* Ability to work effectively with staff and students;* Ability to work well within a team;* Ability to track data and outcomes and present information in compliance with Federal requirements;* Ability to present information to groups through workshops, seminars and presentations.Physical Work Environment:Typically require: Operating a computer, communicating, observing and repetitive motions. Work is primarily performed in an office environment and requires standing and/or sitting and using computers for extended periods of time.

Frequent need for oral, written and auditory communication; Working in an open office environment with frequent interruptions and distractions; Exercising independent judgment in gathering, arranging, and evaluating data. May exert between 10-30 pounds of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to transport, put, install, remove, or otherwise move objects. Supplemental InformationCompensation, Work Schedule, and Benefits:Salary is $5,071 per month; ~$29.14 per hour.

Position is eligible for overtime.Work schedule is generally Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. 40 hours per week.

This position is required to work on-campus.Leave eligibility, use and cash-out is based on BTC Policy 525.2. Although considered "temporary", for leave purposes only, this position is designated as "Regular" and will be provided under the following criterial: Position will receive 8 hours per month of sick leave, 16 hours per month of vacation leave, 3 personal leave days and paid state/college holidays. Vacation is eligible for cash-out at the end of the assignment.

Benefits also include a Washington State insurance package including medical, dental, vision, life insurance, and long-term disability; a retirement benefits package, with choice between the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS) Plan 3 or the State Board Retirement Plan (SBRP) 401A plan TIAA. Additional optional benefits include ability to participate in a medical Flexible Spending plan, Limited Purpose Flexible Spending plan, or Health Savings Account; Dependent Care Assistance; discounts for automobile and homeowner insurance; two voluntary investment (not matched) programs - TIAA (403b) or the State Deferred Compensation (457) plan. Employee Assistance Program (EAP); up to 21 days of military leave; up to 5 days of paid bereavement leave, paid civil/jury duty, ability to participate in a shared leave program; up to 2 days of unpaid holiday for reasons of faith or conscience.
