Annual Salary/Hiring Range:$37,000 for Aug. 16 to May 15 each year (9 months) + $1,250 teaching stipend
Job Purpose:Reporting to the Director of the TRiO Achievers program, the Academic Counselor works to ensure the academic success of all program participants by providing comprehensive academic counseling, individualized needs assessment and other needs-based counseling assistance to low-income, first-generation and disabled students and working collaboratively with other campus support programs designed for at-risk students.
Job Summary:- Provides comprehensive needs assessment, academic advising/planning and ongoing monitoring of participant progress for a caseload of approximately 65 to 70 students.
- Provides career, social/personal, financial and other needs-based counseling assistance.
- Serves as adviser to the TRiO Leadership Council.
- Teaches TRiO-specific classes for program participants.
- Develops and facilitates academic skills workshops.
- Chaperones one cultural event per semester.
- Serves as an advocate for low-income, first-generation and disabled students.
- Participates in initiatives and on committees that support the program mission.
- Creates and conducts presentations to market the program across campus.
- Provides ongoing training on the academic counseling component of position(s) to graduate assistants.
- Master’s degree in counseling or related field.
- At least one year of counseling or related experience with college students. Graduate assistantship will be considered.
- Previous teaching experience.
- Experience with TRiO as a professional or participant.
- Experience advising student organizations.
- Demonstrated ability to work with diverse populations, including low-income, first-generation and disabled students.
- Strong organizational, communication and computer skills.
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with students, faculty and staff.
- Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends for program-sponsored events.
