Triage Registered Nurse (RN), Call Center (Novato), Full Time, Days
Compensation: $50.33-70.00/hr.
Shift: Monday - Friday 8am-5pm OR 9am-6pm

MarinHealth Medical Network is looking for a Triage RN for our Novato Call Center. This Triage RN appropriately triages patient symptoms on the phone.

QUALIFICATIONS
Education:
- Graduate of accredited school of nursing required.
- BSN preferred.
- On-the-job training in triage.
Experience:
- Three to five years of practical RN experience; outpatient experience preferred.
- One to two years of practical experience in a physician’s office or medical office setting preferred.
Other Requirements:
- Current Registered Nurse, as defined by the California Board of Registered Nursing.
- Current BLS Certification with AHA
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Talks directly to patients on the telephone and directs them to an emergency room, urgent care center, or to see their physician during office hours.
- Performs short evaluation of the patient situation to estimate severity of illness and/or injury including learning about chief complaint and, as possible, obtaining vital sign and mental status information.
- Determines urgency of seeing the patient based on brief assessment and on familiarity with a patient’s condition and history. May use computerized medical information database, which uses algorithms that closely imitate physician logic and thought patterns, as guide. Confers with physician or primary care clinics as needed.
- Sends those with high-risk chief complaints such as chest pain, abdominal pain, or severe headaches to ER immediately or arranges for ambulance. May provide appropriate home health advice to those patients who do not need to go directly to the ER.
- Sets up appointment for patients who do not need to go to ER but need to see a physician or arranges for an appointment scheduler to make the appointment.
- Perform all other duties as required or assigned.
Performance Requirements:
Knowledge:
- Knowledge of telephone-based clinical assessment techniques
- Knowledge of medical practice telephone triage
- Knowledge of appropriate home health information for patients to follow until visit
with physician, if they do not need an immediate ER visit
- Understanding of managed care concepts
- Knowledge of medical symptomology and what constitutes urgent/emergent care
- Knowledge of medical terminology and abbreviations, and universal precautions
- Professional knowledge of clinical nursing protocols
Skills:
- Skill in using Epic EMR to check patient history
- Skill in using computerized medical information database during evaluation as guide to appropriate decision
- Skill in making triage decisions and responding quickly and calmly in emergency situations such as calling 911 and arranging for ambulance
Abilities:
- Ability to effectively collaborate with other healthcare team members
- Ability to work with a variety of personalities in the medical office setting.
- Ability to navigate document proficiently in an electronic health record.
- Ability to foster effective teamwork practices between front and back-office staff
- Ability to work closely with physicians and other clinicians as needed
- Ability to communicate clearly and calmly with patient
- Ability to elicit information needed to make brief evaluation
