The Dallas Morning News is hiring a trending news reporter to join our Breaking/Trending team that covers many topics, drawing high interest from local and national reader If you're a journalist fascinated with news everyone wants to read, this role could be a great fit. Trending reporters provide an array of deadline reporting that reflects local, regional, or national topics. Our Trending Reporters are writing about the latest concert at AT&T Stadium one moment and the controversial dress code at a Dallas nightclub the next.

It all depends on what our readers are talking about. The ideal candidate is fluent in social media and will use it as a reporting tool and a way to know our readers' pulse. It'll be the starting point for much of your reporting, but your task will be to take trending topics and wrap them in original reporting and context that make it relevant to Dallas Morning News readers.

Essential Functions: Always report fairly, accurately, and thoroughly Ensure reporting offers a window on the communities we serve that reflect their spirit, personalities, and diversity. Show a strong understanding of open records requests and other investigative tools and tactics. Dig for and gather news and information.

synthesize it in strong prose Make use of visual elements to augment storytelling Build subject matter expertise and audience around a topic, cultivate sources, and generate story ideas Use social media as a reporting tool and a venue for promoting work and engaging productively with relevant audiences. Adhere to company values and newsroom guidelines, including standards of journalism ethics. Assists with planning for photos, graphics, and illustrations to enhance the visual quality of stories and gathers supplemental assets to improve digital presentations Write headlines that sell a story across platforms.

Generally less than seven years of related reporting experience (most entry-level candidates typically have had at least one professional newsroom internship). Skills: 2-3 years of experience in a daily media environment Bachelor's degree preferred Ability to operate in a fast-paced environment, producing stories quickly and accurately Proficient in learning digital content management tools Use social media for newsgathering and audience development Comfort with fast-paced incremental storytelling (e.g., producing social media updates, updating online stories) Demonstrated ability to gather, edit and post basic video and audio Demonstrated ability to work remotely via smartphone or laptop computer Demonstrated ability to interpret audience analytics to inform newsgathering decisions Basic knowledge of SEO and social headline writing techniques Use accepted newsroom tools for planning, authoring, communicating, etc. Collaborate effectively with team members and across newsroom teams Spanish language skills are a plus.Here's our list of preferred skills and experience: (Please note this is not a checklist of requirements, but should be considered as a pool of preferred qualifications.
