Transportation/Instructional Paraprofessional (Farmington's Alternative High School)

Position is 6.5 hours per day, school year. Position includes medical benefits along with 8 paid holidays, 12 sick days, 3 personal days.
Qualifications:
  • Candidate must hold an Associate's degree or 2 years of college credit or its equivalent (i.e. Paraprofessional Assessment). Bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Candidate must hold or be eligible for Connecticut Public Passenger Endorsement V
  • Candidate must pass the required physical examination
  • Candidate will be required to provide a urine sample to be tested for the presence of controlled drugs and alcohol. A candidate who refuses to be tested or who receives a positive test result will not be hired.
  • Candidate should demonstrate the ability to develop and maintain a good rapport with students and possess a personable relationship with teachers.
  • Consideration will be given to the following:
    • ability to carry out directions in both oral and written form.
    • various life/work experiences that contribute to the candidate's overall preparedness.
    • prior experience working with school age children is a plus.

Reports To: Classroom Teacher and Dean of Students
Salary: $24.51 - $27.97 per hour dependent upon experience
General Description: The Transportation/Instructional Paraprofessional provides a variety of instructional services and classroom support to staff and students. This includes carrying out teacher prepared lesson plans and supervising teacher-planned activities, assisting in the preparation of materials for instruction, and recording individual progress of students. The Transportation/Instructional Paraprofessional must be able to transport students to and from school and other school-sponsored events. Must be able to maintain control of students assigned to the vehicle and submit to random drug and alcohol testing during employment. Paraprofessionals work under the direction of classroom teachers/case managers.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Supporting Instruction
  • Tutoring/instruction under the direction of classroom teacher
  • Supporting students during classroom group work
  • Modifying instructional materials
  • Assisting students with technology
  • Helping students maintain focus and engagement

Documentation and Data
  • Understanding students' goals and individual needs
  • Observing and collecting data on student progress
  • Organizing data and writing notes/summaries
  • Giving feedback on student work/behavior

Student Management
  • Monitoring classroom, kitchen, outdoor spaces
  • Reinforcing school-wide behavioral expectations
  • Following student behavior plans

Clerical
  • Scheduling activities
  • Copying, sorting, using technology

Off-site Responsibilities
  • Maintaining a public service license (V-endorsement) and drive school van as needed
  • Transporting and supporting students with:
    • transportation to and from school, community service activities, and field trips

Other
  • Handling records and student information in a confidential manner
  • Completing all assigned mandated training programs
  • May be asked to provide medical or personal care/hygiene which may require lifting up to 50 pounds *
  • Performing other related duties as assigned
