Salary: $62,000 - $90,000, DOE.

Job Summary: The Transportation Modeler performs a variety of complex technical duties in the development, enhancements, and maintenance of the travel demand and land use models, and applies those models to develop future scenarios and projects that support MAG’s various planning efforts and programs.


Compensation: The annual salary for this position is between $62,000 - $90,000, DOE. Includes a full benefits package of medical, dental, and vision insurance, Utah State Retirement, long-term disability, paid holidays, sick and annual time accrual, 401k contributions, and more


FLSA: Salary, Full-time, exempt


Schedule: Regular office hours are Monday through Thursday, 7:30 am to 6 pm. MAG offers a flexible/hybrid work schedule. Work schedules will be determined by the employee and their Supervisor and/or Department Manager and approved by their Supervisor. 


Reports to: The Analytics Manager

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Performs the analysis of traffic data essential to the modeling and forecasting process.
  • Works with the interagency team to develop, calibrate, and validate various models.
  • Develops and coordinates the various models including applying models to scenarios, projects, planning efforts, and programs.
  • Works with the key partners to develop the Travel Demand Model and the Real Estate Market Model.
  • Performs ongoing model support for the following: Regional Transportation Plan, Transportation Improvement Program, and the RPO transportation plan
  • Performs testing, evaluation maintenance, and analysis.
  • Assists in transportation & socioeconomic data collection, processing, and analysis.
  • Updates &  improves the models code (Python, Cube Voyager etc.)
  • Creates new post-processing tools, reporting features, & the overall model functionality in support of the transportation plans.
  • Improves models’ connection to GIS and various applications.
  • Participates in strategic processes to identify and anticipate future traffic, transit ridership, & land use.
  • Participates in user group meetings.
  • Other duties as assigned.

  • Ability to prepare and analyze complex GIS and traffic data
  • Working knowledge of computer technologies, programming language (Python preferred), and related software applications including Microsoft Office suite
  • Ability to analyze complex traffic modeling problems utilizing various programs (Visual Basic, SQL, etc.) and statistics, and make timely recommendations
  • Considerable experience in travel demand modeling, especially Cube
  • Considerable experience with ESRI GIS software and mapping methods and practices
  • Possession of a valid driver’s license is required


Education and Experience: 

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, Urban Planning, Geography, or related field
  • Minimum two years of experience related to the above duties
  • Modeling experience may be supplemented with Data Science, GIS, Programing or Engineering experience

Working Conditions: This job operates in a professional office environment. This role routinely uses standard office equipment. Frequent travel will be required in this position. This is a salaried position, expected to work at least 40 hours per week.


Physical Requirements: This position requires sitting for long periods of time and performing computer-related work. The individual must be able to lift and carry up to 15 pounds. Occasionally drives a motor vehicle within the MAG counties
