The State of Connecticut , Department of Transportation (DOT) , is now accepting applications for two Transportation Maintainer 2 (DOT Highway Electrical Technician)positionsin the Colchester Electrical Facility. These roles have an advancement opportunity for the target class of Qualified Craft Worker (Electrical) .
POSITION HIGHLIGHTS
  • Monday - Friday
  • Full Time, 40 Hours per week
  • First Shift, 7:30 AM to 4:00 PM
  • Incumbents in this class will be required to have a 30-mile residency from the posted job location (Colchester)

THE ROLE
The purpose of this position is to perform electrical repairs, installation and maintenanceof the Department's traffic lights and highway illumination within District 2. Upon successful completion of a 1-to-2 year training period, the incumbent in this role will be evaluated and may be promoted to the target class of Qualified Craft Worker (Electrical).
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
  • Candidates must indicate they hold a current and valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tank endorsement in the "Licenses and Professional Certifications" section of the application, or they will not be considered. Applicants invited to interview will be required to produce a copy of their current valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A or B, reflecting the "tank endorsement," and valid Medical Examiner's Card (MEC) at time of interview. These must be noted in the "Licenses and Professional Certifications" section of the application, in order to be considered.
  • Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever his or her services are needed; to include mandatory winter overtime from November 1 through April 30. Various storm events will require employees to stay at work for the duration of the storm; which at times could be up to a period of several days, to include holidays and weekends.
  • Candidates must be willing to accept emergency duty assignments to include working at heights in a bucket truck on highways and secondary roads, performing high voltage repairs to highway lighting and traffic signals whenever your services are needed.
  • Candidates will be required to bring a copy of their Master Application at the time of interview and a thoroughly completed Connecticut Department of Transportation Commercial Driver Supplement form (CTDOT-CDL-1).
  • Candidates must show how they meet the required knowledge and experience on their application to proceed further in the hiring process. Please specify your Electrical education in your application.
  • PLEASE NOTE: Prior to hire, selected candidates will be required to complete a preemployment physical and work assessment, which will include a respirator physical to be in compliance with the Department's Respirator Policy. A respirator fit test will be performed upon hire.

PURPOSE OF JOB CLASS (NATURE OF WORK)
In the Department of Transportation and the Connecticut Airport Authority this class is accountable for performing a variety of moderately skilled tasks in the construction, maintenance, and repair of state roadsides, roadways, bridges, airports, and other departmental facilities; operates and maintains complex mechanical equipment; works as a moderately skilled mechanic in garages in the routine repair of mechanical equipment.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
The following is a listing of examples of trucks, equipment, tasks or related duties, the operating, maintaining or performing of which are considered to be the responsibilities and duties of positions in this class:
TRUCKS:
  • Class 6 to Class 8 plow trucks with integrated snow and ice specialty bodies; Tandem and Tri Axles without wing plow(s)
  • All of the above when using the following attachments:
    • Snowplows; Integrated snow and ice specialty bodies
    • Truck Crash Attenuators;
    • Trailers and towed equipment (except tilt bed trailers);
  • Pickup, (to include two (2) & four (4) wheel drive vehicles) when using:
    • Trailers or towed equipment;
    • Snowplows or hopper type spreaders;
    • Bridge utility truck;
    • Compressor trucks;
    • Aerial bucket trucks;
    • Wreckers with winch;

EQUIPMENT:
  • Bituminous curbing machines;
  • Pothole Patcher;
  • Tractor Mowers with single flail;
  • Wood chippers;
  • Chain saws;
  • Compressors, and/or compressor tools;
  • Concrete mixers;
  • Concrete vibrators;
  • Hydraulic or engine driven tools;
  • Class twenty four (24) Agricultural style tractor including attachments;
  • Wing plow or other side mounted attachments;
  • Fork lift.
  • Assorted handheld power tools and equipment

DUTIES:
  • Survey monument setting;
  • Burning and cutting with acetylene torch;
  • Flagger (traffic control);
  • May assist a Material Storage Supervisor with stores section material handling;
  • Performing moderately skilled tasks in one or more of the following areas or trades:
    • Construction;
    • Maintenance;
    • Mechanical repair;
    • Electrical;
    • Carpentry;
    • Masonry;
    • Welding;
    • Plumbing;
    • Painting;
    • Performs related duties as required .
KNOWLEDGE, SKILL AND ABILITY
  • Knowledge of
    • the construction, maintenance, and repair techniques of roadsides, roadways, bridges, or airports;
    • the processes and materials used in the construction and maintenance trades;
  • Skills
    • interpersonal skills;
    • oral and written communication skills;
  • Ability to
    • use and make routine repairs to complex mechanical equipment;
    • operate equipment as listed on the attached addendum;
    • understand and follow written and oral instructions;
    • utilize computer software.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - GENERAL EXPERIENCE
One (1) year of experience in the construction, landscaping, commercial driving, snow plowing, maintenance and repair of roadsides, roadways, bridges or airports, in work involving the operation and care of mechanical equipment or work in one of the recognized maintenance trades.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS - SUBSTITUTIONS ALLOWED
Graduation from a vocational or technical school with a diploma designating completion of the subject requirements in one of the maintenance trades may be substituted for the General Experience.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • Completion of an accredited electrical training program and provide proof of the certification
  • 2 years of experience working in the electrical field
  • Experience working with heights in a bucket truck
  • Experience working with high voltage repairs
  • Experience wiring electrical circuits
  • Experience with blueprint reading and interpretation
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Incumbents in this class may be required by the appointing authority to possess and retain appropriate current licenses, permits and/or certifications.
  • Incumbents in this class must be willing to accept assignment to emergency duties, including snow and ice removal, whenever their services are required.

CHARACTER REQUIREMENTS
At state airports: In addition to the checking of references and of facts stated in the application, a thorough background investigation of each candidate may be made before persons are certified for appointment.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
  • Incumbents in this class must have adequate physical strength, stamina, physical agility and visual and auditory acuity, and must maintain such physical fitness in order to perform the duties of the class.
  • A physical examination will be required.

WORKING CONDITIONS
  • Incumbents in this class are exposed to extremes of weather conditions, to frequent lifting of heavy weights, to highly dangerous road and traffic conditions, including exposure to heights when working on bridges, to poison ivy, insect bites and allergy irritants during summer months, and to loud and potentially dangerous machinery.
