- Assists nursing in bedding patient or moving patient from bed into wheelchair or onto stretcher.
- Consults with nursing personnel before lifting and transferring patient and obtains assistance when necessary.
- Attends all required regulatory and standards (JCAHO, HFAP, etc.) in-services on a yearly basis, and participates in initial and on-going training and safe lifting techniques.
- Ensures the safe, timely and accurate transport of patients to their destination, including bringing the proper requested equipment.
- Follows hospital and departmental policies with special attention to safety, infection control and hazardous material measures, dress, attendance, punctuality, and display of ID badge.
- Handles all work related information in a confidential manner.
- Notifies correct patient identification by comparing information from dispatch to patient wristband, obtains correct chart, verifies proper mode of transportation and confirms standard precautions.
- Transports patients to other areas of the hospital.
- Utilizes proper body mechanics when lifting and transferring patients to and from wheelchairs, stretchers or beds.
- Works effectively with members of the team to meet constantly changing needs, processes improvement, and delivers care that is customer oriented and cost effective.
- KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
- Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to interact and communicate with patients and a wide range of staff and hospital personnel in a courteous and professional manner.
- Effective verbal and listening communication skills.
- Ability to utilize various pieces of transport equipment such as wheelchairs, stretchers and beds.
- Ability to operate under potentially stressful or emergency situations.
- Ability to solve problems.
- Ability to follow directions and to provide excellent judgment in order to assess potentially unsafe conditions for both patients and self.
- Must provide courtesy in dealing with patients, visitors and staff.
EDUCATION
- High School Diploma/GED Equivalent Required
- Transport or hospital experience preferred.
- Certified Basic Life Support
