Job description

Overview: Under supervision, to perform work involving the safe, timely and accurate transport of patients, medical equipment and patient-related items to their destinations enabling physicians, nurses, technicians, and therapists to perform their duties in an effective manner. Ensures positive patient, customer and associate satisfaction, proper utilization of body mechanics, adherence to policies and procedures, and standards established by Hospital departmental and regulatory agencies. Responsibilities: PRINCIPAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES(*Essential Functions)
  • Assists nursing in bedding patient or moving patient from bed into wheelchair or onto stretcher.
  • Consults with nursing personnel before lifting and transferring patient and obtains assistance when necessary.
  • Attends all required regulatory and standards (JCAHO, HFAP, etc.) in-services on a yearly basis, and participates in initial and on-going training and safe lifting techniques.
  • Ensures the safe, timely and accurate transport of patients to their destination, including bringing the proper requested equipment.
  • Follows hospital and departmental policies with special attention to safety, infection control and hazardous material measures, dress, attendance, punctuality, and display of ID badge.
  • Handles all work related information in a confidential manner.
  • Notifies correct patient identification by comparing information from dispatch to patient wristband, obtains correct chart, verifies proper mode of transportation and confirms standard precautions.
  • Transports patients to other areas of the hospital.
  • Utilizes proper body mechanics when lifting and transferring patients to and from wheelchairs, stretchers or beds.
  • Works effectively with members of the team to meet constantly changing needs, processes improvement, and delivers care that is customer oriented and cost effective.
Qualifications: JOB SPECIFICATIONS(Minimum Requirements)
    KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES
  • Excellent interpersonal skills necessary to interact and communicate with patients and a wide range of staff and hospital personnel in a courteous and professional manner.
  • Effective verbal and listening communication skills.
  • Ability to utilize various pieces of transport equipment such as wheelchairs, stretchers and beds.
  • Ability to operate under potentially stressful or emergency situations.
  • Ability to solve problems.
  • Ability to follow directions and to provide excellent judgment in order to assess potentially unsafe conditions for both patients and self.
  • Must provide courtesy in dealing with patients, visitors and staff.

EDUCATION
  • High School Diploma/GED Equivalent Required
  • Transport or hospital experience preferred.
  • Certified Basic Life Support
