Job description

The Steamboat Springs School District is seeking a Long Term Substitute Translator/Community Liaison from 03/05/2024-06/05/2024. 
Entry Pay Range: $25.91 - $28.56, depending on experience. 

 

This is a temporary position from 03/05/2024-06/05/2024.
PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES:

 
  • Translation of any and all school-related written documents upon request; examples include Student Handbooks, waivers, READ Act info, flyers, IEPs, notes home from teachers, nurse documents, district office documents and materials.
  • Phone calls to assist in translation for any staff, teachers, office, administration, health room, families, district office staff. 
  • Collaboration with staff to meet student needs.
  • Coordination of meetings with non-English speaking families: parent/teacher conferences, IEP meetings, counseling sessions, check in with teachers.
  • Assist in the coordination of translation services in a required language for interpretation purposes at all schools.
  • Live interpretation at all virtual or in-person meetings with non-English speaking parents upon request: IEP meetings, parent/teacher conferences, discipline meetings, counseling sessions, registration and enrollment, billing questions.
  • Attend and participate in Child Studies, Referral/Review meetings and staffings in all schools in which translation services are required; provide oral and written translations for Child Studies, Referral/Review meetings, and staffings; translate and interpret for parents regarding procedures, observations and parental rights; interpret and translate technical information related to Child Studies, staffings, legal documents and district office policy and procedures, etc.
  • Maintain a high level of communication with Supervisor, Principals, Counselors, ELL teachers, Special Education teams, and Office Managers.
  • Collect and compile information gathered from parents, testing, home visits when necessary.
  • Maintain confidential records in accordance with provisions of statute and district regulations.
  • Organize outreach and recruitment, making initial contact with families in coordination with building ELL specialists.  Examples may include:
    • Counselor meetings
    • Student school registartion events
    • Parent/family communication forums
    • Game night
    • Literacy night
    • Sports registration
    • Lift Up Snack Program
  • Assist with tuition & lunch account issues PK-12
  • Academic and family outreach and events as determined by district Emerging Bilingual team. 
  • Connect with community organizations 
  • Coordinate planning and logistics of outreach events in partnership with Emerging Bilingual teachers
  • Attend and participate in district Emerging Bilingual team meetings 
 

QUALIFICATIONS: 

 
  • Minimum of High School graduate or GED . 
  • One year related experience in world language translation and interpretation.
  • Proficiency in accurate interpretation and translation skills in world language for both verbal and written communication. 
  • Bilingual in Spanish required
  • Possess effective interpersonal and communication skills for interacting with administrators, teachers, students and family members.
  • Ability to maintain individual and student records and files, and to maintain confidentiality of such.
  • Computer word processing skills for written translation and reports.

Errors made in decision-making could potentially result in substantial cost to the District or damage the credibility of the District.

 

Language Skills:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general professional journals, technical procedures and governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedural manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond professionally to questions from groups of parents, community members, commissions, colleagues and Board of Education.

  Mathematical Skills:  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as interest, discounts, commissions, proportions, percentage, circumference, and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra, and geometry. 

Reasoning Ability:  Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.  Ability to interpret an extensive variety of technical instructions in mathematical or diagram form, and deal with several abstract concrete variables. Ability to analyze and use data to supervise the delivery of instruction and the school improvement process.

 

Technology Skills:  Proficient use of technology which includes: basic operations and concepts, word processing, spread sheets, internet usage, critical evaluation of information, data analysis, email, integration of technology.

 

Other Skills and Abilities:  Ability to apply knowledge of current research and theory in education.  Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with staff and community.  Ability to communicate clearly and concisely both in oral and written form.  Ability to copy, coordinate, instruct, evaluate and negotiate.  Ability to perform duties with awareness of all district requirements and Board of Education policies. Ability to discipline students consistent with district procedures.  Ability to maintain confidentiality.

 

Physical Demands:  While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit, talk, or hear.  The employee is continuously required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms.  The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.  Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision and ability to adjust focus.
