The Metropolitan Council's Metro Transit Division is one of the country's largest transit systems, employs more than 3,000 people, and provides ridership through an integrated network of buses, light rail and commuter trains, as well as a resource for those who carpool, vanpool, walk or bike in the Twin Cities.
How your work would contribute to our organization and the Twin Cities region:
The Transit Information Service Installerapplies and installs of all pieces of Transit Information, including bus stop signs, shelter signs, long-term rider alerts, maps, holders, poles, and special installations. Provides work direction to support staff and vendors; and is responsible for overseeing inventory and maintaining accurate information within a database.

  • Apply new route information to bus stop signs prior to work pick and for weekly service changes.
  • Verify completed signs match pick or weekly service change information.
  • Document all completed signs and verify installation matches instructions.
  • Identify specific hardware and tools necessary to perform work at all locations prior to pick.
  • Procure any new tools or hardware in advance of pick in order to perform installation.
  • Conduct annual audit of bus stop and shelter signs; prepare list of locations that have not been updated within previous year.
  • Apply new route information to aluminum sign blanks; direct installation of all locations and verify accuracy of installations.
  • Update or replace irregular holders and displays at any location displaying Transit Information.
High School diploma/GED AND (18) months of experience in building facilities maintenance or repair activities (e.g. cleaning, landscape and snow removal), preferably with Metro Transit WITH (6) months of experience with installing signs, holders, displays, and poles; or similar hardware.
License Requirements:
  • Valid Class D Driver's License and good driving record.
Desired qualifications:
  • Knowledge of Metro Transit's bus stop sign implementation project.
What knowledge, skills and abilities you should have within the first six months on the job:
  • Knowledge of Metro Transit's route system, and operating policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of various hardware and tools necessary for installation of bus stop signs, shelter signs, long-term rider alerts, maps, holders, poles, and special installations.
  • Knowledge of the various forms of hardware used for installations on poles, e.g. banding, ring brackets, tubular brackets.
  • Skill in using Microsoft Excel.
  • lntermediate level skill in using DeviceMagic or comparable online database.
  • Skilled in time management and prioritization of tasks.
  • Ability to operate basic hand tools.
  • Ability to lead and direct the work of others.
  • Ability to read, write and communicate in English.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Ability to work in an environment with loud noise and risk of electrical shock. Works near moving traffic or equipment. Works in wet humid conditions and high precarious places. Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold and extreme hot. Ability to walk, stand, climb stairs, bend or stoop for entire eight-hour shift. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and exert and force up to and more than 100 pounds.

If you are new to the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (safety sensitive positions only), and a background check which verifies education, employment, and criminal history. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the job. If you have a criminal conviction, you do not automatically fail. The Metropolitan Council considers felony, gross misdemeanor and misdemeanor convictions on a case-by-case basis, based on whether they are related to the job and whether the candidate has demonstrated adequate rehabilitation.
If you are already an employee of the Metropolitan Council, you must pass a drug test (if moving from a non-safety sensitive position to a safety sensitive position) and criminal background check if the job you're applying for is safety sensitive, is a supervisory or management job, is in the Finance, Information Services, Audit, or Human Resources departments, or has access to financial records, files/databases, cash, vouchers or transit fare cards. A driving record check and/or physical may be conducted if applicable to the position.
