Transfer Station Attendant
The Opportunity
The Town of Mansfield, Connecticut (www.mansfieldct.gov) is seeking a motivated individual to serve as its next Transfer Station Attendant. This position interacts with the public. Duties include checking identification to ensure Mansfield residency; directing incoming vehicles to proper disposal areas; explaining Transfer Station procedures to general public; monitoring materials to prohibit disposal of prohibited items; ensuring safety procedures are followed; charging and accepting published fees for disposal of items; recording financial transactions at end of the day; and other duties as assigned. This position reports to the Transfer Station Supervisor.

The Town of Mansfield's Department of Public Works provides services for the operation, maintenance, and repair of the Town's fleet and infrastructure such as roads; sidewalks; bridges; solid waste facilities; park and recreation areas; athletic fields; sewers and sewer pump stations; and vehicles and equipment. The following departments, divisions, and programs are reflected under Public Works: Engineering Division which includes sewers; Operations Division which includes equipment maintenance, grounds maintenance, road maintenance, Transfer Station and tree warden; Solid Waste Division which includes trash and recycling contracted services.
The Transfer Station is a self-service fee-imposing site for residents to dispose of trash and bulky waste and to recycle over 40 different types of materials. Some recyclable items are not charged a fee. The swap shop is an area where residents can donate gently used items, electronics, appliances etc. for other residents to reuse.
Mansfield, with a population of approximately 26,000, is located in the Northeastern portion of the state, better known as Connecticut's Last Green Valley National Heritage Corridor. Home to the University of Connecticut, Mansfield offers the unique blend of urban (Downtown Storrs - www.mansfieldmdp.org), suburban, and rural living in a university setting. Mansfield has a variety of cultural and educational offerings, as well as an abundance of natural resources ideal for activities such as hiking, cycling, and kayaking. Mansfield is a Council-Manager form of government, with the Town Manager serving as the Chief Executive Officer responsible for overseeing the day-to-day operations of the Town.
Work Schedule & Location
This position is 19.5 hours per week. The selected candidate will normally work Tuesday and Saturday 8:15 am to 4:15 pm with a 30-minute unpaid lunch break and Thursday 11:45 am - 4:15 pm.
The work location is the Town of Mansfield Transfer Station, 221 Warrenville Road, Mansfield Center, CT 06250.
Compensation
The hourly rate of pay is $18.00-$20.66. The hiring rate of pay will depend upon the selected candidate's qualifications and experience. There are no benefits associated with this part-time position.
Minimum Training and Experience
High school diploma. Experience working with the public, estimating cubic areas and handling credit transactions.
