Tram Driver - Seasonal

Job Title: Tram Driver

FLSA Status: Non-Exempt

Hours: Seasonal (flexible schedule of 24 hours or more per week including weekends, holidays, and evenings) from early March to mid-November

Summary:

Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium is seeking Tram Drivers to conduct safe and enjoyable tram rides for Zoo guests while providing excellent customer service skills to the public by answering routine questions, greeting visitors, and following ticketing policies. Tram drivers deliver engaging information about Zoo exhibits and animals, attractions, conservation initiatives, and more. This position reports directly to the Guest Services Supervisor team.

Duties and Responsibilities (include but not limited to):

• Adhere and comply with the Henry Doorly Zoo & Aquarium Employee Handbook.
• Safely operate the Tram in all weather conditions.
• Ability to assist guests at ticketing kiosks by answering questions and completing transactions.
• Provide general information about prices, location of specific attractions, and safety rules.
• Perform safety checks of the tram at start and end of shift.
• Accurately report any malfunctions or safety concerns immediately to a supervisor.
• Ensure guest safety on the tram and areas surrounding the tram.
• Maintain a clean and professional appearance of ride locations and surrounding areas.  
• Deliver a scripted speech over a PA system while driving the tram along the designated route.
• Ensure guest compliance with rules and safety regulations.
• Assist guests with the loading and unloading of the tram.
• Report all safety related, animal related, mechanical issues, or other incidents to a supervisor or manager.
• Enforce Zoo policies of closures and evacuations in the event of emergency situations.
• Represent the Zoo in a positive and professional manner to maintain an open and accepting atmosphere.
• Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements:

• Must be 18 years of age or older.
• Possess a valid driver's license and a clean driving record.
• Must pass drug screening and background check.
• Must be able to drive a tractor/tram or be willing to learn how to drive a tractor/tram with a clutch.
• Must be available to work at least 24 hours each week during the summer season.
• Must be available to work weekends and holidays during the summer season.
• Must be available to work some evenings for special tram events.
• May be required to stand for long periods of time.
• Must have an outgoing and engaging personality.

Experience:

• Prior experience driving a tractor or tram with a clutch preferred but not required.
• Prior guest services experience preferred but not required.
• Bilingual language skills a plus.

Working Environment and Physical Effort:

• Will sometimes work extended/odd hours including weekends, holidays, and some evening tram events.
• Must be able to walk long distances across the zoo.
• Work is done in an outdoor setting.
• Must be able to stand, sit, kneel, bend, twist, reach above head, and climb.
• Will lift, push, pull, and/or move up to 15 pounds and occasionally up to 25 pounds using safe and proper lifting methods.
• Will work outdoors in all weather conditions, including heat, rain, and snow.
