The City of Lenexa Municipal Services Department is currently accepting applications for a full-time Traffic Superintendent who fosters a team environment, works well with the public, and is proficient with technology to join our team.

Position Summary

This is work in the planning, organizing, and directing of the traffic maintenance operations within Municipal Services. This position works closely with the Transportation Manager to achieve the goals of the Transportation Division. This includes scheduling maintenance activities, organizing and supervising the workload of field personnel, coordinating and inspecting construction projects, developing specifications for acquisition of related materials and equipment, monitoring inventory and coordinating purchasing, and coordinating with other City departments. Work is performed independently with general supervision and review. This position assumes a leadership role within Municipal Services.

Essential Functions, Duties, and Responsibilities

  • Supervises traffic maintenance staff: Assigns work, schedules all routine and preventive maintenance work for the entire Division; responds to emergency situations; and ensures that supplies and equipment are ordered to maintain the above schedules; enforces standards found in the City Code, ordinances, statutes, and the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).
  • Assists with the development and administration of the budget for the Transportation Division; develops and maintains a system of internal controls for operating the Division within the annual appropriation.
  • Develops standards for quality control, implements procedures to produce consistent high-quality work, and ensures that work quality and productivity are maximized.
  • Interacts with members of the public and citizen’s groups; communicates and shares traffic information with Transportation Manager.
  • Assists with the installation, repair and maintenance of streetlights, traffic signals, signs pavement markings, and traffic control for special events.
  • Manages contracted work related to signals and streetlights; schedules, coordinates, and inspects work conducted by contractors.
  • Maintains accurate records of traffic maintenance activities for updating the departments work order system and tracking for performance measures.
  • Responsible for the safety, loss prevention, and training programs for the Division. Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency and safety of work crew. Interprets City/Department policies to workers and enforces safety regulation in the field by monitoring activities for safe practices and trains workers in safe handling of hazardous and other materials.
  • Performs timely and effective performance reviews while working with supervisors to develop plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals.
  • Participates in the recruiting of staff. Makes staffing recommendations, assists in the development of job descriptions, and participates in job interviews.
  • Drives city and/or personal vehicle to perform essential functions of position.

Additional Examples of Work Performed

  • Coordinates Transportation Division goals and objectives with the Transportation Manager and Municipal Services Director.
  • Plans and implements training programs for the Division.
  • Initiates plans to motivate workers to achieve work goals. Performs activities of workers supervised as required.
  • Coordinates and cooperates with the Transportation Manager and other Transportation Division staff, performs a variety of specialized traffic studies, reviews proposed plans with regard to traffic safety, design, and compliance with standards.
  • Maintains complete records of all sign inventory, pavement marking inventory, street lighting equipment, traffic signalization equipment, inventories of materials and expendable products, and other related inventories.
  • Produces written reports and technical documentation; performs a variety of administrative special assignments.
  • Suggests changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiency and safety of work crews.
  • Inspects work areas to determine types of work required and materials and equipment to be used.
  • This position is subject to call backs related to snow, traffic signal, traffic signage, streetlight, or other emergencies including weekends, before and after hours, and holidays.

Qualifications

Minimum: Bachelor’s degree in traffic system management, business management or related field and four years of public works experience, including two years of supervisory experience; OR a high school diploma or G.E.D. and ten years of public works experience, including five years of supervisory experience, may be substituted for bachelor’s degree requirement.

Must possess a valid Class B commercial driver's license (CDL) with required air brake endorsement or ability to obtain within six months. Must possess Level II IMSA certification for traffic signals, Level I IMSA certification for street lighting, and Supervisor’s Work Zone Safety Certification, including flagging, or ability to obtain within one year of employment.

Desired: Experience with, Lucity, ERSI products Flexi Sign Plus, OGL, GIS and related computerized traffic programs. Associates degree in Electrical Technology and/or successful completion of Master Electrician Exam.

Compensation and Benefits
Hiring range is from $87,138 to $101,017 annually dependent on qualifications and directly related experience. The City of Lenexa offers a comprehensive benefits package including:
