The Public Works Department is actively seeking two (2) Traffic Sign Installer.

This is service maintenance work in the installation and maintenance of traffic and street name signs. Work requires knowledge of guidelines, work instructions, routines and procedures used in sign installation and maintenance which is acquired through a combination of training and on the job experience. Contacts require courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. Work is performed following established routines, standing instructions, and established procedures, and involves similar situations requiring choice of correct procedures. Work is performed primarily outdoors where there are some risks and hazards associated with signs, such as exposure to vehicular traffic, paint, dust, dirt, and other unpleasant conditions. Uses shovels, posthole diggers and hand tools; operates equipment such as air compressors and jack hammers. Operates a motor vehicle. The physical demands consist of lifting, loading, unloading, and transporting materials up to one hundred pounds. The work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are detailed and covered by established procedures and the worker is permitted some latitude to use own judgment.

  • Assembles, installs, maintains and repairs traffic and street name signs.
  • Operates truck to and from work sites and picks up supplies and equipment.
  • Prepares and maintains records on completed tasks.
  • Straightens, cleans or replaces damaged or missing signs as discovered during the workday.
  • Performs manual labor such as digging holes and lifting, loading and unloading materials and equipment.
  • Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
  • Performs related work as required.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions.
  • Skill in the erection of signs and mixing small batches of concrete.
  • Ability to perform arithmetic computations.
  • Ability to prepare and maintain records.
  • Ability to read a map.
  • Ability to understand and follow written and verbal instructions.
  • Ability to perform manual labor such as lifting, loading, unloading, and transporting materials up to one hundred pounds.
  • Ability to operate a motor vehicle.

Open Requirements/Supplemental Information
OPEN REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must be able to perform manual labor.

  • Previous experience in the installation or maintenance of traffic and street name signs or related construction experience - preferred.

LICENSING/CERTIFICATION/REGISTRATION:
  • A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
  • Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain and maintain during employment a City of Jacksonville Certification as a Public Driver. Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) Certification must be secure within six (6) months.
  • IMSA Level I Certification must be secure within twelve (12) months.

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:
  • The probationary period for this class is six (6) months.
