Salary: This position traditionally starts at an hourly rate of $24.26 an hour. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.

 

CDL Positions: Candidates with a current CDL will earn an additional $1 per hour for this position. Candidates without a CDL will be given 90 days to obtain their CDL, with training provided by INDOT, and will then earn an additional $1 per hour upon successfully obtaining their CDL.

 

Location: This position is in INDOT's LaPorte District Technical Services Division.  


Role Overview: The purpose of this position is to perform technical engineering assignments in collecting and analyzing data as well as preparing reports for various traffic and safety studies. Takes customer requests and conducts traffic investigations looking holistically at the locations and provides recommendations based on engineering principles. Makes observations of existing field conditions throughout the District and provides recommendations of improvements on a regular basis. Investigations are completed using special tools and measuring devices. Makes factual determination of causes and contributing conditions for fatal crashes along with preventative recommendations.

A Day in the Life:
  • Collect, correlate, and analyze field data for assigned projects.
  • Conduct various traffic studies; count traffic; take roadway measurements, draw sketches, and take photographs of locations being investigated.
  • Use Microsoft Office software, spreadsheets, databases, word processing, and graphics software to produce reports.
  • Recommends proper course of action to supervisor from collected information and reports.
  • Prepare work orders.
  • Maintain traffic control device inventory.
  • Work with public to answer questions and to clarify requests.
  • Participate in snow removal activities.
What You'll Need for Success:
  • High School Graduate or equivalent.
  • Must possess valid driver's license.
  • Must have a valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) or ability to obtain a CDL within 90 days.
  • Basic knowledge of Computer Aided drawing drafting skills.
  • Considerable knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts & draw valid conclusions; develop complex reports.
  • Must be detail oriented and possess excellent organization skills.
  • Must possess excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Must be able to work independently.
  • Must be available for snow and ice removal and report in a timely manner.
