TPWD MISSION

To manage and conserve the natural and cultural resources of Texas and to provide hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation opportunities for the use and enjoyment of present and future generations.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION:

Under the direction of the Minor Repair Program Manager, this internship is an opportunity designed for students to obtain relevant work experience to be competitive for future positions in park programs, such as: historic sites and structures, field archeology, curatorial GIS, interpretation/education, outreach, natural or cultural resource management, law enforcement, business development, marketing/promotions, budget management, human resources/volunteer management, training program, project management, administration etc. Responsible for completing a few key projects within the Headquarters Facilities Management Group.  These projects include, but are not limited to, developing environmental permit renewal packages, developing strategies and processes for facility inspections and best management practices, supporting field work related to park operations, safety programs, and maintenance and construction projects. Work activities will include the development of process improvement initiatives that might include Sharepoint site development, Excel macro programming and general process development. Emergency Management, Safety, Property Management, Facility Maintenance, Facility Management and Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ).  Duties may include: TCEQ Permit renewals.  Ensures compliance with State and Federal laws and regulations, and agency policies and procedures.  Performs additional duties as assigned.  Complies with all Agency, Division, and Branch rules, regulations, and procedures.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Education:

Current enrollment as an undergraduate or graduate student in an accredited college or university or recent graduate within the last 6 months;  

Minimum of 18 completed semester credit hours from an accredited college or university;

Must have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.5 or higher on a 4.0 grade point scale or "Pass" on a Pass/Fail system.   

 

Experience:

None required. 

 

Licensure:  

Must possess a valid state driver's license.

NOTE: Retention of internship contingent upon maintaining required license.

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Knowledge of relevant State Park program fundamentals as it relates to program specific intern opportunities as: natural or cultural resources; budget or financial; business, marketing and promotions; human resources and volunteers; interpretation, education, outreach; law enforcement; historical sites and programs; archaeology; curatorial; web administration; or database development;

Knowledge of State Park operations;

Knowledge of natural and cultural resource management fundamentals; Knowledge of financial and business practices;

Knowledge of human resources practices and procedures;

Knowledge of park related maintenance practices;

Skill in effective verbal and written communication;

Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with peers or leaders while working on projects or assignments;

Skill in managing several projects simultaneously;

Skill in using MS Word, Excel and Outlook;

Skill in working as a member of a team;

Skill in exercising leadership qualities;

Skill in with civic or community engagement;

Skill in meeting deadlines;

Skill in providing quality customer service in a courteous and professional manner;

Ability to prepare reports;

Ability to maintain flexibility and work with frequent interruptions and multiple changing priorities;

Ability to communicate effectively with the public utilizing written oral and visual means;   

Ability to maintain confidentiality;

Ability to conduct work activities in accordance with TPWD safety program.

 

WORKING CONDITIONS:

Internship duration is approximately 400 hours, not to exceed August 31, 2024:

Work week schedule to be mutually determined by supervisor and intern;

May be required to work holidays and weekends, depending on intern assignment;

Must conform to TPWD dress and grooming standards, work rules and safety procedures;

May be required to operate a State vehicle;

Required to travel 25%;

Non-smoking environment in State buildings and vehicles.
