TOWBOAT CHIEF ENGINEER Job Function:

Towboat Chief Engineer maintains all major and minor vessel equipment. Equipment includes main engines, generator engine, electrical systems, hydraulics, air compressors, centrifuges, water systems, sewer systems, heating and cooling systems, and alarm systems. A Towboat Chief Engineer is required to perform maintenance on barge equipment. A Towboat Chief Engineer works under the supervision of the Master, except when in port for shipyard periods, major renovation and overhaul.

TOWBOAT CHIEF ENGINEER Job Duties:

Basic Functions

Operates and/or maintains main engines, generator engine, electrical systems, hydraulics, air compressor, centrifuges, water system, sewer systems, heating and cooling systems, and alarm systems.

Periodically checks all equipment, maintains oil, fuel and water levels, monitors temperatures and pressures.

Towboat Chief Engineer maintains proper operation of basic systems such as electrical, sewage, heating and cooling, and winches.

Towboat Chief Engineer maintains equipment on barges as required.

Towboat Chief Engineer disassembles machinery, makes repairs and reassembles.

Additional Responsibilities and Requirements

A. Learning and training

Learns operations of the vessel and equipment over a period of years while progressing from entry level to Assistant Engineer.

The Chief Engineer provides training to the Assistant Engineer and to other personnel in maintenance, troubleshooting, repair skills and engine room functions.

The Chief Engineer and Assistant Engineer must stay abreast of information updates and changes pertaining to troubleshooting and repair of machinery and equipment.

The Chief Engineer and Assistant Engineer receive direction from the Port Engineer and other shore based personnel.

The Chief Engineer and Assistant Engineer assist the Field Engineer with specialized repairs as needed such as head or power pack replacements.

B. Safety

Participates in and may rotate as lead for monthly safety meetings.

Maintains equipment, tools, supplies and machinery room spaces in clean, dry and orderly condition.

Reports unsafe conditions to the Master including a description of the situation, corrections needed and additional comments. Corrects unsafe conditions as they are observed and within his area of responsibility.

Practices safe work habits and wears appropriate safety equipment as required by current safety regulations.

Ensures that machinery guards are in place such as guards around moving parts, color coded hoses, etc..

Maintains and inspects alarm systems such as fire alarms.

Trains others in safety in the engine room environment.

Maintains vigilance while working near moving machinery.

C. Inspecting, record-keeping and verifying

Follows daily, weekly, and monthly maintenance schedules and periodic inspection for deck machinery and engine room machinery and equipment.

Inspects primary equipment and machinery several times per watch.

Keeps records of fuel consumption by monitoring gauges or taking soundings.

Keeps daily log of items such as hours of engine operation, temperatures, pressures and fuel consumption.

Keeps log of major repairs and maintains parts inventory for repairs

Reports machinery and equipment deficiencies to Port Engineer.

Implements and follows maintenance plans by setting up schedules for personnel to follow to accomplish these tasks in a timely fashion.

Checks inventories and stores on the vessel and writes requisitions for needed parts and supplies for the engine room.

Verifies the receipt of ordered parts and supplies.

General Qualifications:

Ability to read maintenance procedures and training materials.

Ability to communicate unsafe condition and complete checklists for requests for repairs and supplies.

Ability to complete log books and checklists.

Ability to write descriptions of unsafe conditions.

Ability to count, add, subtract, multiply and divide in order to calculate additional oil needed from gauge readings, to calculate quantities of parts and supplies needed, and to calculate consumption rates.

Ability to effectively communicate with the Master, Crew members, Port Engineer and other Engineers.

Ability to instruct others in maintenance operations.

Ability to work safely and reliably, and to attend to many details during hours on duty.

Provides effective work direction and training to personnel assigned to engine room functions.

Makes good decisions.

Is dependable, conscientious and shows initiative.

Pays attention to details.

In willing to adhere to orders, rules and regulations.

Is a team player, is able to coordinate activities within the scope of the vessel.

Is stable under pressure and withstands the stress associated with the job, including discomfort, unpredictable weather and potentially hazardous situations.

Work aboard the vessel for prolonged periods according to the work schedule for the vessel, for example: 28 days on and 14 off.

Is willing to work as operations require, including additional days away from home for long periods of time and able to live in close quarters for long periods of time.

Must be drug and alcohol free while on company property or during course and scope of company business.
