JOB TITLE: Toolmaker Helper

DEPARTMENT: Manufacturing

REPORTING TO: Manufacturing Manager

PRIMARY FUNCTION OF POSITION:

Assist the Toolmaker, Group Leader or others in manufacturing parts and building sub-assemblies and equipment. He will take directives from the Toolmaker or Group Leader and assist them during the assembly process of making primarily the mechanical portion of jigs, dies, fixtures, special machines or subassemblies. He may also assemble electrical items under the direction of the Controls Lead Technician. He will be responsible for retaining the knowledge of various machining and assembly techniques as demonstrated by the Toolmaker or Group Leader. The Toolmaker Helper may be given his own jobs when he has proven the initiative and ability to move into a Toolmaker role.

DESCRIPTION OF DUTIES:

  • Pass any necessary training requirements to perform job duties such as: Forklift Training; ESD Training; GPS Cleanroom Work Instruction; GPS FOD Prevention; NC Module, Glue 2.0 EAB, etc.
  • Ability to read and understand basic blueprints and willing to learn Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T).
  • Will be required to operate basic tool room equipment such as: Prototrack mill, surface grinder, band saw, drill press and lathe. Also must have the ability to use measuring tools such as: micrometers, dial calipers, dial indicators, etc.
  • Ability to inspect own workmanship prior to submitting to Quality Inspection.
  • Able to work from both written and verbal directions and build components from sketches as well as drawings.
  • Perform daily tasks as directed from the Toolmaker or Group Leader.
  • Respect the experience of others around you as they offer their guidance to train you.
  • Report poor fit conditions or workmanship which are critical to quality to the Toolmaker or Group Leader.
  • Perform specified bonding operations per outlined work instructions; complete samples and specified track and trace information.
  • Willing to travel with a Toolmaker to install and/or make repairs to equipment at the customer’s site when required.
  • Must adhere to all relevant ISO / AS guidelines and procedures, quality and workmanship standards, and all safety guidelines and regulations.
  • Should have their own basic Toolmaker tools to work efficiently and effectively. Must show initiative to buy and make tools to perform their job duties without borrowing tools from others on a daily basis.
  • May be required to wear clean room garments and follow all regulations whenever working in the clean room restricted areas.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE REQUIRED:

  • Must have a High School Degree or GED.
  • Trade-related college courses or Certificates of Completion are desirable.
  • Two years of related experience and/or training preferred.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • This positon will work in both front and shop environments.
  • In the shop, you will be exposed to airborne particles, moving mechanical parts, machines, and material handling vehicles. PPE is required in this shop area.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • While performing duties of this job, the employee is required to have good hearing and sight.
  • You will need to be able to walk the shop floor and be able to lift up to 20 pounds.
