Job description

JOB SYNOPSIS:

This position provides support and services to all (currently 14) MCC Great Lakes thrift shops who annually contribute upwards of $3 million to the ministries of MCC. The person in this position is expected to encourage shop operations to grow profitability annually, to assist with problem solving in daily operations, to encourage and advocate for board development and sound policies, and to nurture manager skill development while offering and promoting MCC Thrift Shop Network resources. This person also acts as a liaison between MCC and Great Lakes thrift shops, communicating regularly, through speaking engagements and person to person conversations, the mission of MCC and how the funds contributed are used to partner with others around the world in ministries of relief, development and peace building. This person will be responsible to see that all Memos of Understanding with the thrift shops are updated and signed regularly.

Specific Tasks and Duties:Major Responsibilities:

· Relationship building/networking (35%)

· Fund-raising/development (35%)

· Education/training on best practices (20%)

· Communicate the mission of MCC (10%)

Tasks:

Relationship building/networking (35%)

1. Build healthy relationships with shop managers and boards.

2. Visit each Great Lakes shop annually or more as requested (virtually or face to face).

3. Assist shops in networking with one another.

4. Participate in MCC Great Lakes staff meetings, retreats, and staff activities.

5. Collaborate closely with the MCC U.S. Thrift Shop Development Coordinator, East Coast

and Central States Thrift Shop Coordinators.

6. Participate in conference calls and meetings with other MCC staff who resource thrift shops, meeting in person at least annually.

Fundraising/development (35%)

1. Work with managers and boards to move shops to greater efficiency and profitability, translating into larger shop contributions to MCC.

2. Provide operations problem-solving support in areas such as: merchandising, marketing, sorting, salvage, product management systems.

3. Encourage use of the MCC thrift resource website which provides operations, marketing, thrift HR, and board governance resources.

4. Encourage best practices in personnel and volunteer management, recruitment and recognition.

5. Meet with shop boards to encourage healthy board function and nonprofit best practices.

6. Strategically invest time in shops evidencing good growth potential and thus most fund- raising payoff for MCC.

7. Facilitate grassroots interest in congregations and groups to open new MCC thrift shops.

Education/training on best practices (20%)

1. Work with regional and national Thrift Coordinators to organize online and face to face workshops and training sessions for managers, board members and key volunteers.

2. Assist the US Thrift Shop Development Coordinator with planning and facilitating national and bi-national conferences as requested.

3. Increase shop awareness of safety issues and procedures.

4. Organize MCC Thrift Shop orientation, training and education sessions for thrift shop board members and staff (paid or volunteer) as needed. These may include online or onsite sessions for individual shops or groups of shops.

Communicate the mission of MCC (10%)

1. Provide MCC information to existing shops.

2. Support use of signage and literature in shops and share stories to connect staff and volunteers with the mission of MCC.

3. Coordinate speaking engagements at shops' annual volunteer events, as requested.

Other duties as assigned on a temporary basis.

Supervision: No direct supervision.

Travel expectations: Up to 40% with 21-30 nights away per year. Most travel within the GL region, some thrift network travel outside the region and internationally.

Physical Activity/Demands:

· Constantly remaining in a stationary position, often standing or sitting for prolonged periods of time.

· Occasionally moving about to accomplish tasks or move from one worksite to another.

· Occasionally light work that includes moving objects up to 20 pounds.

· Constantly repeating motions that may include the wrists, hands and/or fingers.

· Occasionally assessing the accuracy, neatness and thoroughness of work assigned.

Essential:

· Bachelors Degree or demonstrated experience in business, marketing, or management.

· 1-3 years experience in experience in retail or similar marketing and merchandising experience.

· Proficiency in internet, email and MS office.

· Financial literacy, including budgeting, or willingness to learn.

· Excellent written/verbal communication skills."

Employment eligibility: Legally eligible to work in the U.S. MCC offers of employment are subject to a successful criminal background check(s).

Preferred:

· Spanish language ability

· MCC Thrift shop experience

· Three to Five years’ experience in communications, marketing, or related field
