Job description

Under the direction of theProgram Director Theaterand consistent with the Christian mission of the YMCA,the MusicalDirector isresponsible for supervising themusicalfunctions of thecompany. Their duties includedeveloping an overall vision for the production's music, leading the musical aspects of the audition process, helping cast actors and singers.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Understanding the specifications and constraints of a platform and working with available resources.

  • Holding auditions for new musical talent and assigning parts to different students.

  • Assessing the rhythm, tone, voice, and skills of each student and developing a good understanding of their individual abilities.

  • Providing vocal and instrumental demonstrations where necessary.

  • Leading and supervising rehearsals and performances.

  • Staying up-to-date on developments and trends in the music industry.

  • Professional Skills: Reading music,Accompanyingon piano, Conducting, Arranging, Hiring/casting, Experience with Theater, Collaboration, Leadership, Adaptability and Verbal Communication.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • High school diploma, orequivelant.

  • Minimum of 2 years in theater management.

  • Excellent knowledge of music techniques, theory, and performance.

  • Great organizational, interpersonal, and communication skills.

  • Strong leadership, time management, and multitasking abilities.

  • Ability to give clear instructions and make decisions under pressure.

  • Some go on to become arrangers, composers, or musical theater adapters, while others advance in their careers by directing productions for increasingly prestigious musical theater or opera companies.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in music

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

  • Ability to walk, stand, and sit (including on the floor) for long periods of time.

  • Position may require bending, leaning, kneeling, and walking.

  • Ability to speak concisely and effectively communicate.

  • Visual and auditory ability to respond to critical situations and physical ability to act swiftly in an emergency.
