JOB OVERVIEW


GENERAL SUMMARY
The Theatre Key Grip is responsible for the supervision, setup, operations and maintenance of the theatre systems and equipment. The Theatre Key Grip is highly skilled as a technician with specialized expertise and extensive experience as an electrician, audio tech, stage carpenter, or counterweight system operator/rigger.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
  • Ensures the quality and completion of theatre tasks and may at times be the sole on-site technical theatre representative for the event/performance as on-site supervisor (OSS).
  • Leads and/or completes the audio, lighting, orchestra shell and other stage systems setup in preparation for client arrival as well as approves, assists and supervises the use of such systems by qualified client staff.
  • Designs lighting and audio with in-house equipment as required by guests’ needs and contract terms.
  • Assists clients with movement of scenery and equipment and operates any equipment as needed for the event.
  • Leads and participates in the inventory and maintenance program for the theatre.
  • Maintains clean, neat, organized work and storage areas.
  • Leads and participates in special development projects that involve building or assembling equipment.
  • Maintains theatre event paperwork during event shifts as OSS.
  • Leads and participates in the ongoing development of standard operating procedures for the theatre.
  • Develops ideas and proposals for continued improvement in the theatre.
  • Reports to supervisor regarding status and situation of technical systems and needs.
  • Acts as a liaison between clients, Theatre Production Supervisor (TPS), Theatre Manager and other Meydenbauer Center departments.
  • May be asked to address front of house issues with clients in the absence of the Theatre Manager as OSS.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE
  • Bachelor’s degree in technical theatre or theatrical design preferred.
  • Two (2) years of professional or graduate level production experience in operation and maintenance of theatre technical systems involving all aspects of audio, lighting, rigging and production applications.
  • Stage and production management and/or design experience is preferred.
  • Previous supervisory responsibility is preferred.
  • Other equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY
At times, this position may be required to supervise clients and crew.


WORK ENVIRONMENT
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works in the theatre and stage area of the building. The employee is regularly exposed to heat and/or cold conditions, and may occasionally be exposed to outside weather conditions. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to high, precarious places and risk of electrical shock. The noise level in the work environment is usually loud.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

The employee is regularly required to use hands and fingers to handle, or feel or operate objects, tools or controls, reach with hands and arms, talk, and hear. The employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, climb and/or balance and is occasionally required to stoop, kneel, crouch or crawl. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and ability to adjust focus. The employee may regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds, frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds, and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds.


POSITION TYPE / WORK SCHEDULE
This is a part-time position. Hours worked may vary and are dependent upon events in the Theatre. At times, the Theatre Key Grip will be required to work evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.
