Duties and Responsibilities
(NOTE: ** denotes Essential Functions)


  • **Under the general supervision of the Theatre Manager, responsible for implementing all production elements (lighting, sound, set design, construction, etc.) for Leeward Theatre events.
  • **Ensures safe working practices, supports Theatre Management in advancing tech information for theater spaces, and facilitates repair and maintenance of resources and equipment.
  • **Plans, directs, and supervises technical operations, including policy implementation and maintenance.
  • **Oversees production elements, determining technical supports needed, advising on specifications and costs, and assisting with lighting, set, props, and stage construction.
  • **Reads and interprets blueprints, completes scenic design elements within production schedules and budgets, and sets up, maintains, and operates sound, lighting, stage, and technical equipment.
  • **Ensures smooth operation of technical aspects for all productions, including rigging safety, and supervises stage areas and tech booth for safety, cleanliness, and readiness.
  • **Assists with the preparation of technical operation budgets, maintains inventory, and orders specialized supplies.
  • **Manages equipment purchases, leases, or borrowing within specified budgetary limits, making recommendations for capital purchases.
  • **Provides an annual technical inventory of equipment. Monitors equipment conditions, performs preventive maintenance, recommends/arranges repairs, replacements or refurbishment within budget constraints.
  • **Maintains knowledge of all equipment and oversees training.
  • **Develops and implements policies for a safe work environment.
  • Assists in recruiting and managing student workers and volunteers.
  • **Attends required production/tech meetings, oversees load-in, and develops relationships with local designers, builders, and colleges with technical training programs.
  • Stays abreast of new technology and software in technical theater.
  • Work hours will include days, evenings, weekends, and holidays as required.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Possession of a baccalaureate degree and 4 years of progressively responsible professional experience with responsibilities for theatrical event experience in set construction, set design, lighting design, sound engineering/design, rigging, technical direction, or production management; or any equivalent combination of education and/or professional work experience which provides the required education, knowledge, skills and abilities as indicated.
  • Considerable working knowledge of principles, practices, and techniques in the area of lighting, sound, or scenic design/building as demonstrated by the broad knowledge of the full range of pertinent standard and evolving concepts, principles and methodologies.
  • Considerable working knowledge and understanding of applicable federal and state laws, rules, regulations, and theories and systems associated with technical theater or event management.
  • Demonstrated ability to resolve wide ranging complex problems through the use of creative reasoning and logic to accurately determine the cause of the problems and the resolution of the problems in an effective, innovative and timely manner.
  • Demonstrated ability to interpret and present information and ideas clearly and accurately in writing, verbally and by preparation of reports and other materials.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external organizations, groups, team leaders and members, and individuals.
  • Demonstrated ability to operate a personal computer, apply word processing software.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead subordinates, manage work priorities and projects, and manage employee relations.
  • Strong project management skills demonstrating the ability to deliver complex and detailed productions.
  • Ability to read blueprints and lighting plots for theatrical designs.
  • Ability to lift and carry materials weighing between 50 - 100 pounds on a daily basis.
  • Capable of enduring extended periods of standing, frequent bending or stooping, and climbing of steps and ladders. Occasionally may be required to work on a stage grid at a height of 60 feet.
  • Able to work days, evenings, and weekends as required.

Desired Qualifications:
  • Possession of a Master’s Degree in technical theater.
  • Experience with any of the following software: AutoCad, Vectorworks, LXFree, Wysiwyg, Capture, QLAB, etc.
  • Experience in preparing budgets, labor estimates, build calendars, or staffing schedules.
  • Demonstrated experience with safety and use of Genie Lift or other lifts.
