Job description

Provide technical support for the East Lansing Hannah Community Center Albert A. White Performing Arts Theater and for all audio/ video equipment within the community center to ensure professional support and production. The Theater Technician is responsible for operating, protecting, and maintaining the theater’s technical assets. Provides design skills and theater expertise for productions, performances, and rental customers through effective communications with all City staff, customers, and potential clients.

POSITION RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Demonstrate a commitment to Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion in serving the public and within all aspects of the work environment.
  • Operates, maintains and safeguards the technical assets of the theater and the Hannah Community Center’s audio-visual assets, including supervising the use of lighting, sound, communications equipment and the use and maintenance of stage facilities.
  • Designs, sets up, maintains and operates lighting and sound systems for theater, dance, music, speaking events and projects in the theater. Assists guest designers and clients with technical matters.
  • Advises production managers, lighting and sound designers, on technical specifications, costs and usage of technical equipment required for an individual show or performance.
  • Supervises and assists with stage management.
  • Provides equipment lists, theater drawings upon request.
  • Meets with potential theater rental clients on a regular basis.
  • Training: rigging system locations, and creative lighting and sound designs.
  • Monitors the condition of equipment including lighting, sound equipment, and other theater assets; arranges for, or conducts, routine maintenance, preventive care and repair.
  • Attends technical rehearsals, to supervise the technical mounting of productions.
  • Maintains knowledge of safety protocols related to theater use.
  • Performs facility audio visual equipment inspections.
  • Conducts set up and tear down of audio equipment for Boards & Commission meetings several times monthly.
  • Conducts set up and tear down of audio equipment for special events within the Community Center.


Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or equivalent and 2 to 3 years of progressively responsible experience in a theater setting, including stage management with considerable knowledge in theater protocol, theater lighting & design, sound, stage and set design.
  • The ability to operate, program and assist in the operation of sound and light boards.
  • Ability to work with city staff and contractors; maintain schedules; evaluate and maintain equipment; and perform routine maintenance checks.
  • Knowledgeable in theater rigging systems and repair and regulation of theater equipment and stock.
  • Ability to work and communicate positively with all ages.
  • Ability to operate and use basic office equipment and software.
  • Ability to work varied schedule including evenings and weekends.
  • Ability to operate assigned equipment/vehicle. A valid Michigan driver’s license required.
  • Ability to move throughout the building and stoop, kneel, lift and climb ladders as needed.
  • Ability to effectively communicate in both oral and written forms.
