Central to our mission is St. Nicks Alliance’s Youth & Education. SNA’s Youth and Education team serves more than 6,000 young people each year through our growing portfolio. All programs are grounded in well-established youth development principles and are characterized by trusting, caring relationships with peers and adults; youth engagement and input; and a sense of belonging and community. Arts education is a critical component of St. Nicks Alliance’s Youth and Education division. As such, this opportunity is ideal for a passionate arts educator interested in supporting high-needs youth in a theatre arts classroom experience.

ABOUT TEACHING ARTIST OPPORTUNITIES
The St. Nicks Alliance Division of Youth and Education is looking for part-time after-school Theater Teaching Artists to work at our programs in Elementary Schools, Middle Schools, Beacons, and Cornerstone Community Centers.

Job Description
The Teaching Artist will be responsible for designing and delivering curricula for Theater arts enrichment activities while ensuring the safety and engagement of youth. As a TEACHING ARTIST you are responsible for creating a fun and nurturing learning environment that engages participants in creative play appropriate for their developmental ages. You’ll be responsible for planning and implementing daily lesson plans, teaching, and directing youth in productions , focusing on the process of creating live theater, developing skills and building community. The position requires a passionate, creative, energetic, team-building leader committed to providing the highest quality of programming for youth.

Responsibilities
● Design and deliver curricula for Theatre arts enrichment activities
● Facilitate project based arts activities that are engaging and age-appropriate working towards a curriculum program
● Actively monitor and engage participants during all program activities
● Plan and facilitate purposeful and engaging activities and theme-based projects catered to the age, stage and interests of participants
● Serve as a positive role model for participants by demonstrating professional language and behavior
● Develop positive, caring relationships with young people and their families
● Utilize youth development principles to enhance program quality and support growth in young people
● Collaborate with co-workers and program supervisors around effective program operations; uphold all safety standards and procedures

● Actively participate in training and professional development to continuously improve on quality
● Attend division professional development trainings and meetings

St. Nicks Alliance offers consistent work throughout the school year and summer, up to 40 weeks per year. Teaching artist schedules can be 1-5 days per week, typically during the after-school hours with some school day services possible. We pay teaching hours, set-up/clean-up hours, lesson planning, and meetings at the TEACHING ARTIST’s established hourly rate. Professional development opportunities for TEACHING ARTISTs are provided both within and outside of the organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES FOR ALL TEACHING ARTISTS

● Utilizing Understanding by Design model, design and deliver curricula for arts enrichment projects that aligns with city and state arts standards and culminates in an end of session curriculum showcase & arts program, evident of student learning.

● The TEACHING ARTIST designs clear, well-organized, sequential lessons that reflect best practice, align with the theme, teach specific artistic skill, result in a project, is culturally informed and is appropriate for diverse learners.

● Ability to coach, guide, support and supervise TEACHING ARTISTs and TEACHING ARTISTs in training.
● Availability to participate in morning bi-weekly meetings, cohort meetings and attend training.
● Ensuring the safety and well being of by actively monitoring and engaging participants during all program activities.
● Serve as a positive role model for participants by demonstrating professional language and behavior. Develop positive, caring relationships with young people and their families.
● Utilize youth development principles to enhance program quality and support growth in young people.
● Collaborate with co-workers and program supervisors around effective program operations; uphold all safety standards and procedures. Follow protocols for reporting suspicions of child abuse
● Regularly attend and actively participate in training, professional development, and meetings to continuously improve on quality.
● Engage and enrich the creative abilities of young people. Expand arts literacy skills through classroom instruction, exposure to cultural and community connections.

CANDIDATES MUST:

● Familiarity with the NYC Arts Education Community, NYC Arts Education standards and best practices.
● Outstanding communication skills.
● Ability to work collaboratively and independently.
● Ability to problem-solve and think outside the box.

QUALIFICATIONS:
● Bachelor’s degree or proven experience working in K-12 classrooms.
● A minimum of two years teaching arts programming to Pre-K-12 students. Artists must display expertise in arts discipline of interest through educational and professional accomplishments.
● Experience designing innovative lesson plans that align curriculum with educational standards (including NYC Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in the Arts) 
● Ability to create stage performances or mount exhibits within 10 – 12 weeks.
● Understands classroom management as successful student engagement and has experience implementing effective strategies, experience with Social-Emotional Learning practices a plus

● Flexibility to travel throughout North Brooklyn.
● Ability to receive and clear DOE fingerprinting and background clearance (before any teaching opportunities will be offered). Ability to submit medical clearance. 

Hourly Rate: $30-$50 based on experience and education

Job Types: Part-time, Temporary

Pay: $30.00 - $50.00 per hour

Expected hours: 20 per week
