Position Summary: The Northern Light, the student newspaper at the University of Alaska Anchorage, is currently recruiting for the Advertising Sales Representative position. This position is up to 20 hours/week and the salary is $12.03/hour.

Duties:

The Northern Light is the University of Alaska Anchorage's student newspaper, funded both by student media fees and Advertising Sales. The publication is primarily text based and strives to be digital-first, publishing stories, audio and video content online in a timely manner. Stories are also published in a printed edition. Copies of The Northern Light are distributed throughout the UAA campus and the Anchorage community. Total distribution is around 2,000 copies per print. Job posting summary:

The Advertising Sales Representative is responsible for helping generate revenue beyond student fees. The Northern Light's primary source of revenue outside of student fees comes from selling advertisements, and we continue to look for new revenue channels. The marketing representative reaches out to organizations on campus and in the community to share advertising opportunities with The Northern Light, and they maintain and cultivate relationships with existing clients and partners. The Advertising Sales Representative will be responsible for executing weekly, monthly and annual sales goals.

The Advertising Sales Representative will find new clients and see them through the entire sales process. They will: identify a client's advertising needs, boost revenue by offering and selling additional services, inform clients of the sales process and ad requirements, review orders with clients, create insertion orders, and make sure ads are being received and placed properly. They also issue billing and tear-sheets for clients in a timely manner, maintain billing records, and thank clients after completing the sale. 

The Advertising Sales Representative is under the operations manager. They will work with the operations manager to develop a plan for achieving sales goals, implement and develop a long-term strategy to grow The Northern Light brand, write revenue and budget reports, raise awareness of the paper, and ensure the fiscal stability of the newspaper. The Advertising Sales Representative will work collaboratively with other staff on the paper to fix client's ad submissions and identify revenue opportunities in different mediums. The position requires a high degree of planning and communication abilities. The Advertising Sales Representative is expected to schedule meetings with staff to discuss work products, review and update ad packages, and produce a final product fit for publication by a deadline.

 

Knowledge, Skills, Abilities: Ability to work on deadlines and work cooperatively with others.
Ability to maintain regular business hours.
Proficiency with Excel or other spreadsheet programs.
Experience with customer service.
Possess familiarity with word processors, Google Drive, and Windows and Macintosh computers.
College level courses in business, accounting, marketing and advertising preferred.
Experience in sales, accounting, business, and bookkeeping preferred.
College level courses in journalism and public communications preferred.
Experience working on a publication preferred. Preferred Experience & Education:
Required Experience:
No prior experience is required for this position, though prior sales or advertising and customer service experience is preferred.

Typical Education or Training:
To be eligible for student employment in Student Life & Leadership, an applicant must: a. Be enrolled in the University of Alaska system with a minimum of six credit hours in the current semester of employment; or b. Have been enrolled the preceding semester for six or more credit hours and demonstrate plans to enroll for six or more credit hours in the next semester for employment between semesters; and c. Have at least a 2.0 cumulative grade point average (GPA) or approval from the MAU Senior Student Services officer or his/her designee. d. Students enrolled in non-traditional programs of study will be considered eligible for student employment with the approval of the Senior Student Services officer. e. An applicant must provide evidence of enrollment as outlined above to substantiate employment eligibility.

Salary Information:

This position is a student position up to 20 hours/week and the salary is $12.03/hour.
