What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking a Test Operations Engineer to support operations in the Metallographic Preparation Laboratory (Metlab) of the Metallurgy and Materials Joining Department. This role includes the implementation of operational, maintenance, and administrative procedures to support the safe operations of the Metlab, as well as the operational oversight of a collection of metallographic preparation and evaluative capabilities that are used heavily by Metlab technologists and staff. The Metlab team consists of permanent R&D technologists, with regular support from Metallurgy staff and a rotation of year-long and summer interns.
We operate a wide suite of metallographic preparation and evaluation tools. Preparation includes saws, grinders, polishing wheels, cameras, optical microscopes, chemical etchants, and use of nanoparticles. Metlab analyses are conducted with further complex optical microscopy, microhardness testing, and other evaluative techniques as appropriate.
As a Test Operations Engineer, you will have both daily operational and regular customer interfacing responsibilities as well as key safety roles. In the operations role, you will be responsible for the operation, maintenance, and user interaction for incoming Metlab requests. You will be the primary scheduler and job request point-of-contact and will prioritize those requests against our laboratory capabilities, resources, and project need. As the initial stakeholder interface, you will work intimately with the Metlab team, with organizational staff, and directly with customers and stakeholders. In the safety operations role, you will have the opportunity to oversee the development of the safety paperwork needed to ensure the safe operations of the entire Metlab including operating procedures, pressure safety data packages, work control authorizations, etc. This may include the development of new safety paperwork to allow for novel metallographic preparation methods to be developed. Here you will work hand in hand with ES&H professionals, key staff, and technologists from the Metlab.
On any given day we will be called upon to
Operation Role
  • Act as primary scheduler for Metlab operations, working directly with customers, stakeholders, and staff to appropriately prioritize competing demands against Metlab capabilities and resources
  • Interface with the customers to ensure customer expectations are met
  • Responsible for Metlab supporting items including maintaining safe access (ability to serve as an Alternate Classified Administrative Specialist (ACAS) is preferred), set-up and ownership of uncleared visitors including vendors and maintenance personnel (among others as appropriate), maintaining classified computing access, and acting as primary purchaser for Metlab resources
  • Maintain relationships with owners and users of other metallography and characterization laboratories within the national security enterprise, including other metallography and characterization laboratories at Sandia as well as metallography laboratories at KCNSC
  • Maintain data management and lessons-learned for metallographic requests through One-Note or similar accessible software package

Safety Role
  • Act as Laboratory Owner to include responsibilities related to ensure lab safety is maintained
  • Prepare work planning and control documentation, to include failure mode analyses and safety cases, for work being conducted at the Metlab
  • Aid in design and development of new metallographic preparation and evaluation needs e
  • Interface with the customers to ensure customer expectations are met

Due to the nature of the work, the selected applicant must be able to work onsite
Qualifications We Require
  • Master's degree in materials science, metallurgy, or related science, technology, engineering, or mathematics (STEM) field, or the equivalent combination of relevant experience and/or education
  • Demonstrated experience writing and reviewing safety technical work documents including operating procedures, pressure safety documents, etc.
  • Able to acquire and maintain a DOE Q-level security clearance

Qualifications We Desire
  • Prior experience supporting a wide range of customers with competing priorities and deadlines
  • Strong preference for individuals with prior experience with metallographic preparation and evaluation
  • Experience with negotiation schedules, deliverables, and deadlines. Familiar with project planning, project management, and activity coordination.
  • Prior experience working with both internal Sandia users and external users
  • Excellent communication skills and the ability to work well as part of a team.
  • Good time management skills

About Our Team
The Metallurgy and Materials Joining Department (1831) is the principal organization for metallurgical and joining research and engineering support throughout the Laboratories. Expertise covers a broad range of experimental and predictive capabilities that apply fundamental process, physical and mechanical metallurgy principles. Specific technical areas include welding and soldering, special brazing and diffusion bonding, and mechanical behavior. The scientific focus is on materials structures, properties, performance and reliability. Staff supports a variety of national security programs and is highly engaged in providing collaborative, innovative materials science and systems-based engineering solutions.

Security Clearance

NNSA Requirements for MedPEDs
If you have a Medical Portable Electronic Device (MedPED), such as a pacemaker, defibrillator, drug-releasing pump, hearing aids, or diagnostic equipment and other equipment for measuring, monitoring, and recording body functions such as heartbeat and brain waves, if employed by Sandia National Laboratories you may be required to comply with NNSA security requirements for MedPEDs.
If you have a MedPED and you are selected for an on-site interview at Sandia National Laboratories, there may be additional steps necessary to ensure compliance with NNSA security requirements prior to the interview date.
Position Information
This Limited Term Employee (LTE) position is a temporary position for one year term, which may be renewed at Sandia's discretion up to a maximum of seven years.
Individuals in LTE positions may bid on regular Sandia positions as internal candidates, and in some cases may be converted to regular career positions during their term if warranted by ongoing operational needs, continuing availability of funds, and satisfactory job performance.
