Job description

At Ports America, the Terminal Engineering Intern supports site leadership in the planning, execution and supervision of the duties associated with terminal operations and staff. This includes ensuring efficient, safe, and productive operations for your assigned customers, terminal area, and cargo type (Engineering Shop, Container Freight, Ro/Ro, Bulk, Break Bulk, Cruise, etc.).
Essential Duties:

  • Effectively oversee and direct the work activities of management, labor, foreman and other personnel; ensuring performance expectations and customer needs are met.
  • Develop short range business plans designed to achieve company goals and objectives while operating within approved fiscal budget.

  • Assist in determining the amount of labor needed for each day and ensure labor is order appropriately for your assigned Department.
  • Make recommendations affecting overtime cost and general expenditures and ensure they are made in the best interests of our company and customers.
  • Determine additional staffing / labor needs and contact union hall in advance, ensuring cost-effective staffing and availability.
  • Identify areas of cost reduction and leads and support OPEx initiatives.

  • Actively champion the company's Safety program ensuring that all labor and staff comply with accident prevention / safety and workers' compensation programs and procedures.
  • Review Safety trends for your area and incorporate corrective measures.
  • Develop and review efficient operational plans for all departments including vessel, yard, gate, planning and Maintenance and Repair (M&R).
  • Work closely with M&R/Terminal Departments to ensure the appropriate equipment allocation meets operational demands.
  • Maintain positive relations with labor and union officials and that the Collective Bargaining Agreements associated to your workforce are understood and followed.
  • At times, attend Labor Relation Committees for grievances you have filed and follow up on decisions informing peers and direct managers of outcome.
  • Provide regular training and feedback to labor and management staff.
  • Communicate areas of accountability and performance expectations to labor and management staff.
  • Ensure certifications and required military training and/or clearance is current.
  • Other duties as assigned and relevant

Minimum Qualifications:
  • Enrollment as a matriculated student within a Maritime College / University or similar institution
  • Experience with computerized operating systems
  • Valid US Driver's License
  • Obtain / Maintain TWIC (Transportation Workers Identification Card) issued by the Department of Homeland Security

Preferred Qualifications:
  • Knowledge of safety and accident prevention codes and regulations
  • Knowledge and understanding of cargo stowage and stability.
  • Knowledge of and commitment to safety and accident prevention, safety codes and regulations, and related industry governmental regulations.

Working Conditions:
  • Climb up and down a ladder on a vessel multiple times within a shift
  • Work in changing hot and cold climates based on weather conditions.
  • Work in an environment that may be hazardous to persons unable to see and hear fast moving equipment.
  • Lift, push, and or pull up to 30lbs.
