Description:

The Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition invites applications for the positionof Department Head. According to the National Academy of Kinesiology, theprogram in Kinesiology is ranked 1st in the State of Illinois at 13th nationally. The program is also ranked first nationally in publications. The Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition empowers allstudents to pursue excellence through scientific discovery, clinical practice,and health promotion. It ensures that graduates become leaders who excel in careersthat enhance the quality of life for individuals and their communities.
The Departmentof Kinesiology and Nutrition currently enrolls students in a wide range of undergraduate,masters, and doctoral programs. The BS in Nutrition and Nutrition Scienceenrolls 136 students. The BS in Kinesiology enrolls 456 students. The MS inKinesiology enrolls 33 students. The MS in nutrition enrolls 72 students. The Ph.D.in Kinesiology and Nutrition enrolls 27 students, for a total enrollment of 724students.
Facultywithin the UIC Department of Kinesiology and Nutrition are nationally and internationallyrecognized for their teaching and high-impact research. Programs within thisdepartment boast very high rankings. For example, the MS Coordinated Programwas ranked in the top 35 schools according to Becomeanutritionist.org. Faculty collaboratewith students and research associates at all levels in a hands-on scientific andeducational environment, where student engagement, inclusive excellence, andactive learning are priorities. The department produces leading experts in the fields of health, fitness and Nutrition. Our outstandingprograms range from undergraduate to the doctoral level, preparing students forsuccessful careers in allied health or continuing their education with advanceddegrees. The department houses a metabolic kitchen, which is available to all UIC investigators for theconduction of clinical feeding trials, our experienced dietitians develop menusand prepare, package, and distribute meals to subjects. Additionally, ouraward-winning teaching garden integrates food into the classroom, teaching howto plant, harvest and prepare fresh produce. The Department ofKinesiology and Nutrition is located in UIC's College of Applied Health Sciences and enjoys a long history of collaboration withthe other seven UIC health science colleges and with the University ofIllinois Hospital and Health Sciences System (http://hospital.uillinois.edu/). The DepartmentHead provides academic leadership at all levels and has ultimate responsibilityfor establishing the departmental mission, goals, policies and procedures,managing all aspects of departmental operations, including but not limited tobudgeting, teaching, and personnel, and ensuring compliance with all applicablelaws and regulations from accrediting agencies, the University, the UIC Campus,and the College of Applied Sciences. The head of the department fulfills themission of teaching, research, and service, and teaching workload is determinedbased upon the departmental workload policy and in consultation with the Dean.The head is fully invested in the job of leadership, prioritizing it over theirown academic/research pursuits. The head is actively involved in program andcurriculum development, program evaluation, strategic planning, and studentsuccess initiatives and has experience with leadership and knowledge in thesestudent-facing areas. The head anticipates faculty and staff attrition,sabbaticals, emergencies, course coverage requirements and is ready ahead oftime with a plan in such circumstances.
The Head is also chargedwith fostering the research efforts of tenure and clinical track faculty who are workingacross campus and across institutions to build interdisciplinary collaborationsat the leading edge ofKinesiology and Nutrition. In conjunction with these efforts, the Head is expected to demonstrate on-goingscholarship by maintaining a vigorous research program,
publishing scholarly works andparticipating at national/international meetings. Additionally, the Head is expectedto demonstrate expertise in building partnerships with underserved communitiesand a commitment to promoting faculty and students who are under-representedin science, including Women, persons with disabilities, and those identifyingas Black or African American, Hispanic or Latino, and Indigenous.


 

Qualifications:


To be considered for thisposition, the candidate must have a PhD or equivalent degree in ahealth-related field and a strong national and international record ofscholarly productivity and excellence at an academic institution. The candidatewill have active involvement in the professions of Kinesiology or Nutrition, aswell as a degree commensurate with expertise in Kinesiology or Nutrition. Theselected candidate will also have the capacity for academic leadership that cancommunicate and achieve the vision of the Department of Kinesiology andNutrition, the College of Applied Health Sciences and UIC. Candidates must havea scholarly record sufficient for appointment as a full Professor withtenure.
