Job Summary:

Recreation and Wellbeing at the University of Wisconsin-Madison is seeking a dynamic, energetic, and innovative individual to fill the position of Tennis Professional. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Tennis, the Tennis Professional will spend approximately 50% of their time on the tennis court teaching/facilitating tennis lessons/programs and 50% of their time assisting with a variety of administrative duties related to the Tennis department. They will directly supervise 10+ student Instructors and indirectly supervise 25+ Member Services student employees.
This position will work in collaboration with the Assistant Director of Tennis to provide, develop, coordinate, and enhance high-quality, engaging, safe, inclusive tennis programs and services catered to student, member, community, and youth participants. The Tennis Professional is responsible for providing consistency in instruction and positive reinforcement based on lesson goals. They will clearly articulate, enforce, and educate participants on all rules, policies, and procedures. The Tennis Professional will serve as a main contact for individuals who are involved or wish to be involved with the programs and services offered at Nielsen Tennis Stadium.
The Tennis Professional will maintain daily office hours to assist with administrative duties such as answering phone calls and email correspondence, website updates, tennis program tracking & record keeping, and employee payroll. They will assist with the overall management of comprehensive campus recreation software (Fusion, CourtReserve, and Connect2Concepts). The Tennis Professional may assist with providing on-site management of special events, tournaments, and over 25 other events per year. This position is required to work into the evenings and on weekends. The expected schedule is Tuesday, 10:30am - 7:00pm; Wednesday - Friday, 12pm - 8:30pm; Saturday, 8am - 4:30pm. Weekend schedule may vary based on facility events. Summer schedule may vary based on facility hours of operation.

Responsibilities:

Manages a comprehensive recreation program. Oversees and performs activities including policy development and enforcement, program development and expansion, participant eligibility, and/or risk management. May supervise staff.
  • 20% May assist with the implementation of the personnel resource allocation plan including hiring, training, supervision, and resolution of personnel issues
  • 20% Assists with the management of applicable software systems for program registration, sport management, and participation data
  • 5% May assist with monitoring and auditing the unit budget
  • 30% Schedules logistics and secures resources to support the operational plans of the program
  • 5% Implements risk management procedures and ensures adherence to institution and divisional policies
  • 20% Assist with the development and instruction of new and existing programs to meet the needs and fulfill the expectations of the department

Bachelor's Degree

Qualifications:

Required
  • Minimum of two years of experience in a position with responsibilities related to teaching tennis to both youth and adult participants of all abilities
  • Demonstrated success in articulating proper tennis skills to participants
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate professionally (written and verbal) with clients and colleagues
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Word & Excel or similar programs, and is generally proficient with other computer and web-based software
  • Experience working in a team and supporting colleagues
  • Experience providing strong customer service

Preferred
  • Experience planning and leading tennis programs
  • Experience training and/or supervising employees
  • United States Professional Tennis Association (USPTA), Professional Tennis Registry (PTR), or similar tennis related certification

This position requires most work to be performed in-person, onsite, at a designated campus work location. Some work may be performed remotely, at an offsite, non-campus work location, up to one day per week, if desired.

The minimum starting salary for this position is $52,000 but is negotiable based on experience and qualifications.
