The Position
The Water Resource Recovery Department is seeking multiple temporary Wastewater Plant Operator Trainees. These positions will train in and perform work in the operation and control of wastewater treatment facilities, equipment and processes.
  • Positions will be located at Durham, Rock Creek, and Hillsboro/Forest Grove Facilities
  • Temporary positions, up to six months.
  • Full-time, up to 40 hours per week.
  • Any offer of employment will be conditional based on the successful completion of references, a driving record review, criminal background check, and a medical exam.

Essential Functions
Performed under close supervision and in a developmental capacity. (The essential functions listed below are not intended to reflect all duties that may be assigned to this classification. The District may augment duties and/or essential functions at its discretion. Additionally, some incumbents may not perform all Essential Functions.)
  1. Train in the operation of equipment used in the preliminary, primary, secondary, tertiary and solids treatment of wastewater; learn to operate, inspect, clean, adjust, calibrate and monitor equipment and instruments and make minor repairs.
  2. Train in the monitoring and operation of the wastewater treatment process in accordance with permit and process control standards; measure biological and chemical levels and liquid flow; measure inventories of process; troubleshoot and resolve process problems.
  3. Learn to collect liquid and solid waste samples; learn to perform standard and non-standard biological and chemical tests for troubleshooting or research work; record results.
  4. Take and record process lab and flow readings; download data to recordkeeping systems.
  5. Keeps assigned area(s) clean and hazard-free; uses safe work practices and follows District safety policies and procedures.

Qualifications
KNOWLEDGE OF:
  • Basic knowledge of wastewater treatment
  • Safe work practices in an industrial setting

SKILL IN:
  • Identifying mechanical malfunction
  • Keeping records and logs accurately
  • Use of computer software for data collection and entry into spreadsheets and word processing documents
  • Use of hand and power tools

ABILITY TO:
  • Understand and follow oral and written instructions
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with those contacted in the course of work including co-workers, other District officials, and the public
  • Operate effectively in a team environment
  • Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing

EXPERIENCE AND TRAINING GUIDELINES:
Any combination of experience and training that would likely provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities is qualifying. A typical way to meet KSA's would be:
Experience in the operation of a wastewater treatment plant with an activated sludge process; or
College level coursework in wastewater technology, Chemical Engineering, Civil Engineering, Environmental Engineering, Engineering, Biology, Chemistry, Microbiology, or related fields; or
An Associate's degree or a one year certificate in wastewater technology; or
Completion of a Correspondence Course in Wastewater Technology or obtaining a Provisional License issued by the Oregon DEQ
CERTIFICATION AND LICENSURE REQUIREMENTS:
Upon selection, all candidates must possess and maintain a valid State isssued driver's license.

Depending on hours worked and duration of the position, temporary employees may qualify for an offer of medical benefits, deferred compensation, and employee discounts. Temporary employees are eligible for sick leave at the rate of .0334 per hour worked upon beginning employment and may carry over up to 40 hours into the next calendar year.
