Description
The City of Fairfax Police Department is looking for a temporary contract person to fill the position of Property Technician. The Property Technician is responsible for all property management and evidence storage for the Police Department. Property management includes maintaining, purchasing, and stocking all department issued uniform and equipment. Evidence storage includes all property in the custody of the department or that which is acquired by the department as found, recovered, or evidentiary property. The Property Technician ensures compliance with all State and local laws regarding the storage and disposition of property and evidence.
Examples Of Duties
Dispose of or destroy evidence/property in accordance with applicable law and department procedures to include hazardous materials such as medical/biological waste, illegal drugs, computers, or pharmaceuticals.
Prepare Court Affidavits for destruction of drugs/weapons and process through the Courts.

Qualifications
Graduation from high school, plus three years of related experience.
Experience with evidence collection procedures; purchasing procedures and bidding; inventory procedures; modern office procedures, methods, and computer equipment.
Necessary Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Knowledge of State law(s) governing property; the principles and practices of work safety; basic techniques and practices of chain of custody rules used in law enforcement property and evidence processing, storage, and disposition.
Must be able to work with frequent interruptions; lift up to 60 pounds; maintain effective relationships with vendors; provide accurate inventory records; utilize the Records Management System and bar code equipment; preserve confidentiality of sensitive materials; and communicate effectively, both orally and in writing.
Additional Desirable Qualification:
Prior property management and evidence experience is desired.
Supplemental Information
Successful completion of a criminal background investigation and polygraph exam required.
Flexible daytime hours.
This position may be filled by civilian or sworn personnel.
Those applicants with current law enforcement certification may elect to continue in a sworn status.
Position is considered Temporary and requires a 30-day break in service during the fiscal year.
Permitted to work up to 1559 hours in a fiscal year and not more than 40 hours per week.
