JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
JOB TITLE: TEMPORARY GROUNDSKEEPER
Reports to: Director of Maintenance
Bargaining Unit: CGM
Status: Temporary
Start Date: When Filled
Days Per Year: 40
Hours Per Day: 8
Wage Range (Salaries are stated as an estimate only. Actual salary is confirmed only upon hire/job offer.)
$ 26.18 - 28.29 per hour
Note: Employees are paid the last working day of each month.

BASIC FUNCTION
Responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of district grounds and assigned landscape areas which includes weeding, irrigation, security, sanitation, and maintenance of equipment and machinery.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES

  • Job Duties are specific to grounds work on athletic fields, landscape beds, mowing, weed eating, parking lot trash pickup, and emptying some exterior trash cans.
  • Work independently and in coordination with school activities and maintenance department.
  • Train and provide work direction to staff and service projects assisting with grounds maintenance and demonstrating appropriate methods of all grounds work.
  • Meet all training requirements required by Chimacum School District and by law.
  • Use hand, power and riding lawn Weed whack, hand weed, trim and edge around sidewalks, roads, parking lots, athletic fields, flower, bush and memorial areas.
  • Maintain, repair, install and operate sprinkler and hose systems both above ground and below ground.
  • Enhance landscaping by creating and maintaining flowers, bark, rocks, gravel, bushes, trees and shrubs.
  • Repair playground facilities, school grounds, bleachers, athletic storage and other outdoor structures to maintain school grounds.
  • Inspect and repair all playground equipment as required.
  • Repair and maintain all asphalt, concrete, parking lot striping, roads, fencing, unused property, etc.
  • Diagnose, test and treat lawns, athletic fields, trees, etc.
  • Apply fertilizer and pesticides as needed to maintain health of grounds.
  • Sweep and clean walks, roads, sidewalks and buildings. Pick up and remove trash and recycling.
  • Shovel snow using various hand and power tools. Use ice removal products and sand to provide a safe environment and pathways.
  • Ensure that grounds tools and equipment are in good repair including mowers, tractors, blowers, weed whackers, pressure washers, etc.
  • Maintain and repair all power and hand equipment used for grounds.
  • Inspections, maintenance and repair of fences, roofs, gutters, downspouts, roof drains, storm water drains, storm water storage, backflow valves for sprinkler systems, septic systems, etc.
  • Understand and operate all underground utilities, valves, meters, in the school district.
  • Be the expert/consultant for all grounds
  • Clean and maintain assigned school facilities.
  • Assist and coordinate the use of facilities for school and outside groups for the use on grounds.
  • Maintain complete inventory of grounds supplies, equipment and orders as needed.
  • Perform light maintenance on furniture, walls, lights, floors, etc.
  • Operate in a defined budget and provide input for future needs.
  • Be on call for inclement weather during the winter season.
  • Provide input on job evaluations of staff assigned to assist in grounds.
  • Other duties as assigned.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
  • High school diploma or GED, any combination equivalent to sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed in this position description, valid Washington State Driver's License, ability to pass pre-employment requirements including a Washington State Patrol check and FBI clearance. Must maintain a legal and approved driver's license during employment to drive District vehicles.
  • Knowledge in all phases of grounds
  • Supervisory or lead skills are preferred.
  • Sufficient strength to perform grounds duties and hard physical work.
  • Ability to work effectively with others as a team.
  • Punctuality and dependability are a must.
  • Five years of experience in a school, large commercial or industrial setting preferred.
  • Communication skills verbally, computer, math and written.
  • The ability to efficiently and effectively use cleaning materials, supplies and equipment, to follow common cleaning practices and procedures, to maintain buildings in a safe, clean and orderly condition, to have safe practices related to cleaning methods and procedures, to perform basic math to calculate accurate dilutions of cleaning agents, to follow laws and procedures related to use, storage and disposal of chemicals, trash and waste materials, to participate in the injury prevention program, to communicate effectively in English both orally and in writing, to relate well to students, staff, parents and the public, to establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others, to perform repetitive tasks, and to work independently with minimal supervision.

Ladders, lifts, forklift, tractor, mowers, weedwhacker, hand and small power tools, Dust mop, Wet Mop, floor scrubbers, Wet Vac, Carpet Extractor, vacuum (backpack style), rags, cart, hand truck, desk/table mover, ladders, pressure washer, handheld radio/ phone, etc.
Supervision and Controls over the Work
The employee works with a high level of independence and professional discretion under the general supervision of a designated school administrator. The employee's work is governed, controlled, and evaluated by acceptable professional practice, school and district policies and regulations, provisions of Washington Administrative Code and Revised Code of Washington, direction of the supervisor, and performance standards and expectations as set forth in the collective bargaining agreement.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties. The employee may be exposed to infectious disease as carried by students.
