Performs a variety of electrical trade functions such as the installation, maintenance, or repair of equipment for the generation, distribution, or utilization of electric energy.


  • Installing or repairing any of a variety of electrical equipment such as generators, transformers, switchboards, controllers, circuit breakers, motors, heating units, conduit systems, or other transmission equipment.
  • Working from blueprints, drawings, layouts, or other specifications, locating and diagnosing trouble in the electrical system or equipment, working standard computations relating to load requirements of wiring or electrical equipment, and using a variety of electrician's hand tools and measuring and testing instruments.
  • Under general direction and/or using detailed procedures and/or work instructions, perform simple and routine as well as some non-routine tasks or tests within, but not necessarily limited to, the area of electrical maintenance and installation.
  • May provide limited guidance and/or on-the-job assistance to lateral and lower level Technicians for work on simple/routine or more complex assignments.
  • Work may be evaluated while in progress and upon completion.
  • Duties will be varied to include performing a variety of activities under general direction in accordance with established procedures: Construct components, sub-units and simple models; adapt standard equipment, troubleshooting and correcting equipment malfunctions, perform planned preventive maintenance or assist with overhaul maintenance using diagnostic equipment for which training has been completed.
  • Work from blueprints, drawings, layouts, work orders or other specifications, performing work according to the latest revision of the National Electrical Code (NEC) or local jurisdictional authority.
  • Conduct basic tests which may require test equipment/set-ups or procedures as well as subjective judgment in measurements.
  • Be able to work safely with systems operating at levels not exceeding 600 volts.
  • Perform maintenance using oral and/or written instructions.
  • Perform troubleshooting/problem identification and resolution of a routine nature.
  • Respond to various types of emergencies and provide assistance as appropriate based on skills, knowledge, and ability.
  • Perform other site support tasks incidental to electrical maintenance assignments.
  • Other duties as assigned to insure timely project execution.

  • Completion of a vocational training school or apprenticeship program, knowledge of electrical codes and regulations, and two years journeyman level experience.
  • High school diploma or equivalent, plus training that includes theory of electrical maintenance and installation.
  • Understand basic math, able to read schematics, diagrams, and technical documents appropriate to trade.
  • Computer experience including email, payroll time entry and online training.
  • Must have a valid U.S. driver's license and demonstrate a good driving record (no significant violations such as DUI, loss of license, inability to obtain personal insurance or currently covered under a high-risk insurance policy, etc.).

Preferred Responsibilities/Requirements

  • Qualified union journeyman electrician with five years’ experience performing troubleshooting and repair work in a commercial or industrial facility and broad knowledge of other disciplines.
  • Safety training equivalent to OSHA 30.
  • Ability to work safely under general supervision, follow written procedures and verbal instructions, perform journey-level work, and manage time to complete assignments.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft products and CMMS computer maintenance management systems.
  • Familiar with laboratory operations.

Other Requirements

  • Escort and monitor work performed by outside vendors in accordance with facility requirements.
  • Complete and return required administrative paperwork on time as directed, (e.g., timesheets, vacation slips, classroom and computer-based training, log sheets, PM / PE / MODs, service records etc.)

  • Possess and maintain a valid U.S. driver's license and demonstrate a good driving record (no significant violations such as DUI, loss of license, inability to obtain personal insurance or currently covered under a high-risk insurance policy, etc.).
  • All regular, non-temporary positions assigned to this classification are represented by a labor union and subject to the terms and conditions of the IUOE Local 95 Collective Bargaining Agreement.
  • Able to work night, weekends, and holidays as needed.

Work Environment

  • Requires work in commercial government facilities (e.g., warehouse, offices, projects, labs, outside locations, etc. where mechanical equipment is being installed, tested, analyzed, monitored, or operated and / or maintained. Equipment may be loud and noisy and or have exposed moving components.
  • Work environment involves some exposure to hazards or physical risks which requires following basic safety precautions. 

Physical and Mental Demands

  • Constant use of vision and mental alertness is required working in all types of weather (heat, humidity, sub-zero cold).
  • Position may involve work indoor or outdoor locations where loud equipment with exposed moving components is being operated, monitored, or maintained.
  • Able to perform all the typical repetitive physical requirements such as: walking, pushing, pulling, handling, grasping, kneeling, working overhead.
  • Able to work in awkward positions for extended periods of time or in confined spaces.
  • Position may involve routine carrying or lifting of 20 pounds (and occasionally up to 50 pounds), or working at heights, climbing stairs, ladders, scaffolds, and using scissors or aerial lifts.
  • Must be able to read, write and speak fluent English to respond to visual and audible alarms.

Integrated Safety Management

  • Observe and follow all corporate, federal, state and site environmental safety and health (ES&H) policies and procedures that pertain to the job classification being performed.
  • Perform only those tasks in which you have the required training, competence, knowledge, skills, and abilities to prevent injury to oneself, other employees, the public, or the environment.
  • Hazard and situational awareness for ES&H risks associated with the work. Perform work safely in accordance with hazard controls.
  • Report all unsafe operations, and, if necessary, exercise stop-work authority in any situation posing imminent or danger.
  • Must wear proper PPE as required and ensure PPE is in acceptable condition.
  • Keep office space, operating area, control room, mechanical room, warehouse etc. clean and orderly.
  • Attend all safety meetings and stay current with assigned required training.
  • Maintain active involvement in the introduction, revision, and/or promotion of ES&H/ISM program activities.

Hours of Work

  • Typical shift is 8 hours per day, Monday through Friday daylight schedule, and must be able to occasionally work after hours on nights, holidays, and weekends.

  • Schedule is determined by the company and business needs.
