Job description

The Department of Neurology at Temple University Hospital in Philadelphia, PA is excited to be offering an inaugural 2-year fellowship position in Clinical Neuropsychology. The Temple University Hospital Neuropsychology Postdoctoral Program is designed to provide specialty training in clinical neuropsychology in accordance with Houston Conference guidelines and to prepare fellows for eventual board certification in clinical neuropsychology.

Mission
The mission of this fellowship is to provide education and training to future neuropsychologists in accordance with accepted standards in the specialty of adult clinical neuropsychology. This fellowship provides both clinical and didactic opportunities to trainees that will prepare them for a career in the independent practice of neuropsychology, with exposure to multidisciplinary team care in the setting of an academic medical center.

Clinical Training

This fellowship offers clinical experience in adult neuropsychology with a broad range of referrals, including suspected neurodegenerative disease, advanced cerebrovascular disease/stroke, multiple sclerosis, movement disorders, HIV/AIDS, anoxic/hypoxic encephalopathy, and traumatic brain injury, or to assess pre-surgical candidacy for epilepsy and neuromodulation. While the focus of training is within an outpatient context, opportunity for bedside assessment of patients admitted to Temple is occasionally available with opportunities for growth for interested candidates. The fellow will also participate in Neurology’s Memory Disorder’s Clinic. The neuropsychological training experience includes formal weekly didactics and monthly fact-finding exercises through a neuropsychology training consortium of regional academic medical centers. The fellow will also have opportunities to attend didactics through the departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Neuroradiology. The fellowship is tailored to be consistent with Houston Conference Guidelines, to produce competent psychologists in the specialty of Clinical Neuropsychology who are prepared for board certification with ABPP/ABCN. The fellowship start date is July 1, 2023; however, a later start date is negotiable.

Temple University Hospital services a diverse patient population, predominantly comprised of individuals from disadvantaged, underserved, and marginalized communities. Our patients typically have a high degree of medical complexity, with multiple medical and psychological comorbidities that can affect cognition. A focus of this fellowship is on culturally appropriate assessment and diversity-related issues are a core aspect of training. Testing with medical interpreters is a common occurrence. Goals for competencies of the fellow include the impact of diversity on the neuropsychological exam, in addition to traditional competencies of interviewing, report writing, data integration, differential diagnosis, feedback provision, and multidisciplinary team collaboration.

While this is a new position, the expectation is that the fellow will have 3-4 outpatient evaluations per week. The Memory Disorders Clinic is currently every other week, but this is subject to increase as the program continues to evolve. Fellows will assist with the supervision and training of practicum students, who will facilitate testing.

Didactic Seminars

The neuropsychological training experience includes formal weekly didactics and monthly fact-finding exercises through a neuropsychology training consortium of regional academic medical centers. The fellow will have opportunities to attend didactics through the departments of Neurology, Neurosurgery and Neuroradiology.  They will also have opportunities to present at neurology residents conference at TUH on topics related to neuropsychology. The fellowship is tailored to be consistent with Houston Conference Guidelines, to produce competent psychologists in the specialty of Clinical Neuropsychology who are prepared for board certification with ABPP/ABCN. The fellowship start date is July 1, 2024; however, a later start date is negotiable.
