Position Summary
The Bilingual Telephone Triage Nurse will answer telephone calls directed to the Telephone Triage department and assess the severity of the participant's health concerns via telephone, using protocols and algorithms in a manner that provides appropriate participant dispositions. They will collaborate with providers, pharmacies and outside agencies via telephone to provide quality participant care in compliance with local, state and federal regulations and accreditation standards. Preferred candidates local to the Washington, DC metropolitan are (DC, Maryland and Virginia).
Reportability
This position will report directly to the Director of Nursing Services.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.
  • Answers participant telephone calls and/or participant portal requests for clinical advice or services.
  • Coordinates Telephone Triage process by evaluating and assessing participants' health care needs based on participant's signs and symptoms utilizing triage protocols and guidelines.
  • Accurately documents symptoms/complaints, nursing assessment, the advice provided and participant/caller response. Follows policies, procedures, and protocols to ensure consistency and departmental effectiveness as well as improve health care outcomes of participants/callers and their access to appropriate health care.
  • Obtains appropriate input and direction from the provider or other members of the care team as needed to determine the best clinical course of action and recommendations for specific participant health care needs.
  • Utilizes standing orders, triage protocols, and algorithms appropriately.
  • Manages prescription refills per protocol.
  • Provides participant education: e.g. home care, chronic disease management, preventive care.
  • Participates in Quality Improvement activities as assigned.
  • Collaborates with telephone operators, telephonic triage assistants, participant care navigators and other Mary's Center departments to ensure that needs are met for the participant.
  • Provides support and training to Telephone Triage Assistants as it relates to receiving telephone requests by participants.
  • Collaborates with outside providers, pharmacies and partner agencies to provide quality participant care in compliance with local, state and federal regulations and accreditation standards.
  • Performs other duties determined as necessary by Vice President of Nursing and/or the Director of Nursing Services.

Qualifications

Knowledge, Skills & Abilities -
  • Registered Nurse, B.S. in Nursing preferred, and must be licensed to practice nursing in the District of Columbia and Maryland.
  • Two (2) years of experience in working in a community health setting with immigrant populations and/or maternal-child health preferred.

Language Requirement - Ability to communicate effectively in English is required. Additional language proficiency or fluency in Spanish preferred.
Physical Demands - Regularly required to sit; frequently required to reach with hands and arms, walk, stoop, kneel, crouch, talk or hear; must be able to lift objects up to twenty-five (25) pounds.
Work Environment - Mostly in a typical office and/or home setting with a quiet to moderate noise level. May be exposed to extreme cold, heat, and humidity due to outside weather conditions.Opportunity to work a hybrid schedule - remotely & onsite, as needed.
