Did you know that the Kenosha Public Library offers more than just books? Our offerings include: storytimes in each library, at local pre-schools and in the community; STEM programming for kids of all ages; 3-D printing; a library of things that can be checked out ranging from card games to camping gear to giant chess sets; adult programming on topics like computers, retirement, weird history, books, and games; teen programming including a dedicated teen space at Southwest Library; outreach services that bring the library to the community including the Bookmobile; and the list goes on and on!


Position Background: The Kenosha Public Library, in conjunction with the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, is piloting a mentored Teen Internship program. The internship is open to Kenosha residents who are high school juniors or seniors; the internship will begin July 10, 2023 and will end no later than August 31, 2023. The Teen Intern will have the opportunity to gain an understanding of the full scope of services offered by exploring departments at all four branches of the Kenosha Public Library. Under guidance by the mentor, the intern will also have the opportunity to develop and implement a connected learning project. The intern will work no more than twenty hours per week throughout the six week internship.
*Please note that the position is strictly open to high school juniors and seniors.
  • Work closely with library team members to learn about various positions in the library and how they support each other.

  • Craft a meaningful project under the guidance of their mentor which will be completed through the course of the internship.

  • Work collaboratively with people from diverse backgrounds and all ages.

  • Provide customer service to patrons.

  • Write about the internship and connected learning project experience.

  • Participate in two surveys conducted by the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.

  • Meet with their mentor at least three hours per week.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Required

  • High School junior or senior residing in the city of Kenosha.

  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record preferred.

  • Ability to work independently.

  • Ability to work 15-20 hours per week.

  • Good interpersonal skills and the ability to maintain and foster cooperative and courteous working relationships with the public.

  • Intermediate computer skills preferred.


Physical Requirements & Working Conditions

  • Far vision at 20 feet or further; near vision at 20 inches or less.

  • Talking and hearing.

  • Sitting, standing, walking, climbing (including stairs) and stooping, bending, twisting and reaching (up, across, and down). Must be able to sit and stand for long periods of time.

  • Intergenerational LGBTQ+ community roundtable

  • Audio engineering and videography workshops to create a music video

  • Library resource booklet for at-risk youth: how to get your GED, clear criminal records, look for jobs, etc.

  • Local history digitization project

  • Translation of library policy and rules documents

  • Naturalization Study Group for community members with transitional immigration statuses

  • Digital literacy training for Chinese speaking senior citizens

  • Create and implement a Latinx teen book club

  • Body Image Bootcamp, a virtual program for tweens and teens with body positive speakers

  • STEM programming for elementary aged summer reading participants
