Position Summary
This recruitment is for Oregon State University students (at any level) and will be used to fill up to three (3) part-time (a maximum of 12 hours per week while class is in session and up to 40 hours per week during term breaks if registered for less than 6.0 credits) Student Technical Assistant positions for the VP of Research at Oregon State University.
The Advantage Technology Transfer Student Intern Position is designed to give hands on experience researching the commercialization potential of new technologies and business concepts originating from the Oregon State University community. As a student intern, you will take part in a variety of tasks needed to screen and market technologies and business concepts for potential commercial use. All duties will be carried out under the supervision of a licensing manager.
This position is open to students majoring in STEM (science, technology, engineering, mathematics) fields in any college or department.
Position Duties
  • Support the licensing manager in all aspects of receiving, summarizing, and evaluating technology invention disclosures for patentability, protection, and commercialization.
  • Facilitate submission of invention disclosures by marketing OSU Advantage services to OSU researchers and guiding the submission process.
  • Review, research, conduct, or prepare invention disclosures, prior art searches and search reports, and intellectual property landscape searches related to disclosed technologies.
  • Draft or edit marketing materials (non-confidential summaries) for marketing OSU technologies to prospective licensees.
  • Perform market research and identify companies that are potential licensees for OSU technologies.
  • Participate in meetings, calls, and communications with OSU researchers, startup companies, and potential licensees.

  • Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
  • Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
  • Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
    • High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
    • Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
    • Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
    • Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
    • Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*

*International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered "full-time" by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
  • Current enrollment in a STEM major, any year.
  • Ability to communicate professionally and clearly through email, documents, in person and over the phone or video calls.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
  • Ability to work independently and drive projects to completion.

This position is designated as a critical or security-sensitive position; therefore, the incumbent must successfully complete a criminal history check and be determined to be position qualified as per OSU Standard 576-055-0000 et seq. Incumbents are required to self-report convictions and those in youth programs may have additional criminal history checks every 24 months.
Preferred (Special) Qualifications
  • Preference for STEM majors in engineering or life sciences (e.g., biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, microbiology, etc.).
  • Previous work experience in a technical or business capacity.

Working Conditions / Work Schedule
  • Interns will be compensated for up to 40 hours per week of work during the summer and breaks, and approximately 12 hours per week of work during the school term.
  • Hours are subject to variation based on fluctuations in invention disclosures and other workflow.
  • Intern work will be coordinated at the direction of Advantage licensing managers, with assignments centered largely on independent research. Most work can be performed remotely on a flexible hourly schedule.
  • Interns are expected to communicate with their supervising licensing manager on a regular basis.
  • Since many projects will involve confidential information and interns may have access to detailed "pre-disclosure" technologies prior to patent filing, Interns will be required to sign non-disclosure agreements as a condition of employment.
