Job Summary
Work is performed for the Environmental Services Department and involves performance of manual work associated with the Maintenance and Construction of outdoor properties to include county properties, other public partner properties, recreational amenities, and infrastructure that include the construction and maintenance of hiking, biking and horse trails and other land improvements and infrastructure. Work includes the operation of equipment to include but not limit to the following: backhoes, bulldozers, skid steers, excavators, mowers and tractors. This position requires the operation of trail construction and maintenance machinery, Land Maintenance machinery, basic carpentry duties, basic mapping and GPS data collection, ability to read and interpret contour maps and Construction plans, landscape Maintenance and other construction duties.
  • Operates listed equipment to perform duties to include but not limited to land and trail Maintenance and Construction of recreational amenities and other infrastructure.
  • Ability to perform land and trail maintenance including erosion control, tree trimming, tree removal, brush clearing and grading.
  • Ability to perform duties from an elevated location such as ladders, lifts and platforms above the ground to perform such task as replacement of signs, tree trimming and limb removal. Ability to walk long distances to survey trails, identify and address maintenance needs and cut and remove trees. Ability to safely operate chainsaws as well as perform basic chainsaw maintenance in the field.
  • Participates in trail and trail-bridge construction and reconstruction and maintenance projects. These projects may include building new trails, improving existing trails, constructing stone retaining walls, rock armoring, installing boardwalks, chainsaw work, and other required activities required to accomplish the assign project.
  • Performs routine maintenance on equipment as specified by the equipment manufacturer or as directed by the supervisor that includes but not limited to daily checks on engine oil, transmission fluid, filters and coolant fluid as well as other maintenance to include but not limited to oil changes, filter replacement, changing blade and replacing belts and greasing.
  • Supervises assigned laborers or inmates in the course of daily operations to ensure work assigned is performed.
  • Performs all duties in a safe and efficient manner.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned by supervision.

  • Lawn, turf mowers, land and vegetation maintenance equipment, and brush cutters
  • Small hand held equipment such as weed eater, edger, chain saw, pole saw, hedge trimmer and blower tractor

Qualifications and Requirements
MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
  • Working knowledge of various types of equipment
  • Six months on the job training operating equipment or technical equipment operation training.
  • Required to obtain a CDL license as a condition of continued employment within one year after hire date.

PREFERRED REQUIREMENTS
  • Class A or B Commercial Driver's License at time of hire.
  • Experience constructing recreational trails.

Physical Demands & Work Environment
WORKING CONDITIONS
Work is mostly performed outdoors operating equipment. Subject to extreme weather conditions. Exposure to fumes from exhaust on equipment. Exposure to high noise levels.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
Work in generally medium in nature involving sitting, standing, walking, bending, operating equipment, with moderate amounts of lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling up to 50 lbs.
