Job Description:
Serves under the supervision of an employee of higher grade who assigns specific area of project support. Works independently to accomplish assigned functions without specific instructions as to work methods and procedures. Receives guidance and instructions in dealing with unfamiliar practices and problems. Work is reviewed for overall adequacy and accuracy of the technical support provided. Serves as a geodetic technician responsible for accomplishing the full range of geodetic studies/surveys/special investigations and projects requiring first order accuracy and precision in support of ballistic/ordnance equipment testing, range expansion and development, and precise mapping. The work requires the application of a practical knowledge of theories and techniques of geodesy particularly as it relates to the identity, reliability and usefulness of geodetic control data as required in the execution and adjustment of geodetic survey data. Incumbent works with test engineers, planning and construction personnel in gathering and providing information for Army testing. Incumbent interprets specifications, instructions, and testing requirements to provide customers with the specific data required, and prepares draft and final maps indicating boundaries or features and field checks the data. Maintains accurate records on field data and performs necessary calculations and provides fundamental CAD functions. Understands and interprets plans, diagrams, maps, and notes and interacts effectively with others using tact and discretion. Plans and conduct studies and projects in the field of geodesy and geodetic surveying as required by the military installation, involving the coordination of specific phases of operations, such as field surveys, compiling and computer data, accomplishing comprehensive reports and plots and establishing final grid and geographic coordinates for an extensive system of monuments and facilities for the military installation. Provides geodetic services by performing descriptive and mathematical analysis on data for several hundred control monuments and facilities. Based on results of analysis, conclusions are presented concerning geodetic elements of new maps. Responsible for selection, transportation, Set-up, adjustment and operation of various pieces of electronic instrumentation. Coordinate the work of other equipment operators as required per test layout. When introduced with new problems in computations due to the use of new electronic measuring devices that can introduce new principles for measurement not covered by precedents will be able to adapt and create new precedents to be followed. Directs and trains employee engaged in geodetic field surveys in compiling, interpreting and reducing data. The incumbent is also required to perform other duties as assigned. Must have 3 years specialized experience in military testing. The majority of the work is performed outdoors where there are regular and recurring exposures to all kinds of weather conditions. The work requires the use of protective equipment and clothing. The incumbent regularly instruments equipment carrying of loads/heavy equipment (up to 50 lbs). Overtime work and TDY may be expected up to 25-30%.
Qualifications: 5 yrs. applicable experience; or at least 60 credit hours or an Associate's Degree and 3 yrs. applicable experience; or 30 credit hours and 4 yrs. applicable experience; or completion of a formal training program and 3 yrs. applicable experience; or a Bachelor's Degree and 1 yr. applicable experience. Essential Functions Form: UNUSUAL OR SPECIAL PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS OF POSITION May require sitting in front of a computer for extended periods of time (up to 50%). The ability to bend, stoop, squat, crawl, crouch, kneel, reach above shoulder level and climb into or under a vehicle is required (up to 50%). Walking a minimum of 50 yards over rough terrain is required (up to 25%). The ability to push and pull as well as lift and carry up to 50 pounds is required (up to 50%). DESCRIPTION OF WORK ENVIRONMENT Work environment may be mostly outside depending on the task. The ability to work in outside field conditions that include hot and cold extreme temperatures and other outdoor climatic conditions is required (up to 25%). Must be able to work in areas where only portable restroom facilities are available (up to 25%). Work environment may be fast-paced and require work under pressure to meet deadlines associated with the completion of a task. Position will require multiple task efforts. Work may require being assigned to shift work (up to 90%). EQUIPMENT AND MACHINES INVOLVED IN WORK TASKS Independently conducts test and evaluations using computer acquisition equipment, general electrical equipment, high speed thermocouple data acquisition, and/or toxic fumes measurement. Work will also involve the use of hand and power tools. Uses a variety of standard references, guides, and precedents to obtain needed information. Work may require being around moving machinery and high voltage equipment. Work may require driving auto equipment, forklifts, skid loaders, as well as other equipment. CRITICALITY OF ATTENDANCE Attendance is critical at all times during normal duty hours. Work outside of normal duty hours, including weekends and holidays, may be required with as little as one-hour advance notice. Travel may be required (up to 5%). OTHER ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS Must be able to communicate effectively. Must be able to obtain an interim secret security clearance in order to gain access to required areas, networks and systems within thirty (30) days of date of your offer letter. Must be able to obtain and retain a secret security clearance. Must be able to provide proof of U.S. citizenship. Must be able to obtain and retain unescorted access to work areas. May be subject to hearing tests, laser eye exam, and complete blood count. May be subject to other physicals or exams if required to wear a respirator or are designated by the COR to have other physicals due to the work area in which you are assigned. May be subject to exposure to noise, vibration, radiation, temperature extremes, lead, petroleum, oil, lubricants, dusts, and solvents. Must be able to wear personal protective equipment as required. Must have a valid driver's license and personal transportation for the purpose of moving around the proving ground to accomplish job functions and in order to operate a rental vehicle if and when travel is required.
