Job Description
The Technician I will join the 'Arid Hydrology and Water Systems' lab at Texas A&M AgriLife Research and Extension Center in El Paso. The Technician I, under general supervision, performs various technical duties in laboratories and fields. The candidate will select, apply, and evaluate standard engineering and scientific methods/techniques used in research, extension, or education activities.
Responsibilities:
- Conduct field and lab experiments using different sensors, tools, and equipment.
- Schedule and complete drone flights and rover navigation for various types of data collection.
- Scan field samples using imagers mounted on the benchtop and tripod systems.
- Use computers for controlling equipment and data compiling and storage.
- Performs cleaning, sterilizing, and packaging of sensors and equipment.
- Maintains and organizes original and electronic records for operations and safety processes, including data entry for annual inventory.
- Constructs, modifies, adapts, assembles, and operates scientific and laboratory apparatus (3D printer) and other equipment.
- Assists personnel involved in the lab and field experiments-based research.
- Systematic review of literature studies to possible technical procedures and experiments.
- Writes and/or edits for education outreach materials requiring academic knowledge.
- Orders lab/scientific supplies and equipment.
- Train and supervise other personnel of the research group.
- Performs other duties as assigned related to the ongoing projects.
Required Education and Experience:
- Bachelor's degree in a related field or any equivalent combination of training and experience.
Preferred Education and Experience:
- Candidate must have or be interested in obtaining a drone pilot license for aerial imaging.
- Experience in performing field and laboratory experiments or assisting in experimental work within the field of specialization preferred.
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Knowledge of laboratory equipment, scientific apparatus, and computer equipment.
- Able to move heavy equipment.
- Independently plan and perform multitasking and work cooperatively with other team members.
- Strong verbal and written communication skills.
- Willingness and ability to work with researchers of the Center and project partners.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
- Strong verbal and written communication skills in both English and Spanish.
Preferred Licenses and Certifications:
- Valid driver's license.
Other Requirements:
- Work beyond normal office hours and/or work on weekends, as needed.
