Job description

Overview

The Technical Supervisor provides support for the Art and Art History Department, particularly in the areas of Studio Art facilities and courses. This person will assist the Department Chair in carrying out the goals, responsibilities, and policies of the department, which comprises Studio Art, Art History, the Visual Resources Library, and Law Warschaw Gallery. The Technical Supervisor will work closely with faculty, staff, and students throughout the department, providing a wide range of technical and other assistance in order to maintain a safe and productive learning environment. This role manages specialized equipment and systems within the industrial-level Studio Art building. This is an in-person position, and most time will be spent on-site, although occasional local travel and a valid local driver's license are required.

Responsibilities
  • Provides a range of technical assistance to faculty, staff, and students throughout the department, primarily in the Studio Art area of the program.
  • Performs departmental business that includes budgeting, attending and convening meetings, record keeping, ordering materials, fabrication, and studio support.
  • Hires and supervises 15 student employees. Maintains student employee payroll records.
  • Maintains and repairs tools and equipment for various studio areas.
  • Is the point person for any issues pertaining to the Studio Art building, and liaises with other departments such as Facilities Services to coordinate repairs or upkeep.
  • Develops and implements safety programs for students, staff, and faculty. Oversees equipment safety and security procedures for the Studio Art building.
Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree required, with Studio Art experience preferred. Experience in technical fields such as building trades, woodworking, or art and craft production accepted in place of a degree.
  • Valid class B Minnesota Drivers License.
  • 3-5 years of experience with: professional development, education, or training in technical processes, woodworking, building trades, art and craft production, computer assisted machinery.
  • Experience managing or working in a college art program’s technical facility strongly preferred.
  • Demonstrated experience and working knowledge of woodworking, welding, metal working, ceramic kilns, foundry furnace and other studio equipment.
  • Working knowledge of safety standards related to Studio Art equipment, materials, and facilities. Ability to teach staff and students about safe operation of tools, equipment, and the proper use of materials.
  • Demonstrated experience with data input, budgeting, record keeping, departmental and interdepartmental communication
  • Proficiency with computer applications, online record keeping, frequent use of spreadsheets and other databases. CAD, and/or use of computer assisted machinery such as laser cutter/3D printer.

Compensation:

The annual salary for this position will be $57,000 to $63,000, depending on experience.
